{"pk":24250,"title":"Cognitive Dimension Reduction: An Information-Theoretic Approach","subtitle":null,"abstract":"We introduce a dimension reduction framework (CDR) that sheds light on how individuals simplify the multidimensional world to guide decision-making and comprehension. Our proposal posits that cognitive limitations prompt the adoption of simplified models, reducing the environment to a subset of dimensions. Within these limitations, we propose that individuals exploit both environment structure and goal relevance. Employing information theory, we formalize these principles and develop a model that explains how environmental and cognitive factors influence dimension reduction. Furthermore, we present an experimental method for the model's assessment and initial findings that support it.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[{"word":"Concepts and categories; Decision making; Mathematical modeling"}],"section":"Papers with Poster Presentation","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8pb848ff","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Maya","middle_name":"","last_name":"Leshkowitz","name_suffix":"","institution":"The Hebrew University of Jerusalem","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2024-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/24250/galley/13846/download/"},{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/24250/galley/21011/download/"}]}
