The current study examines how gestural\nrepresentations of motion events arise from linguistic\nexpressions in Persian, which has characteristics of both\nTalmy’s satellite- and verb-framed languages. We examined\nnative Persian speakers’ speech and gestures in describing 20\nmotion events. We focused on two motion event components:\npath (trajectory of motion like up) and manner (how the\naction is performed like jumping). Results indicated that when\nexpressing motion, Persian speakers produced path in both\nspeech and gesture, whereas manner was conveyed only\nthrough speech (mostly as adverbs). Additionally, dynamic\ngestures tended to occur in the same order they were uttered.\nThe difference between path and manner findings asks for\nfurther research to examine language-gesture interaction in\ndetail among different languages. Results also suggest\nrefinement in gesture theories that argue for one-to-one\ncorrespondence between speech and gesture.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[{"word":"Motion Events"},{"word":"Gesture"},{"word":"language and thought"},{"word":"Persian"},{"word":"Farsi"}],"section":"Papers","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8690j84w","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Niloofar","middle_name":"","last_name":"Akhavan","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, Koç University","department":""},{"first_name":"Nazbanou","middle_name":"Bonnie","last_name":"Nozari","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Neurology, Department of Cognitive Science, Johns Hopkins University","department":""},{"first_name":"Tilbe","middle_name":"","last_name":"Goksun","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, Koç University","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2015-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/25392/galley/15016/download/"}]}
