{"pk":25408,"title":"Moral Dynamics In Everyday Life: How Does Morality Evolve In Time?","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Recent research on moral dynamics (the processes and\nphenomena –collective or individual– by which moral\nbehavior and moral attitudes emerge, evolve, spread, erode or\ndisappear) shows that an individual’s ethical mind-set (i.e.,\noutcome-based vs. rule-based) moderates the impact of an\ninitial ethical or unethical act regarding the likelihood of\nbehaving ethically on a subsequent occasion. More\nspecifically, an outcome-based mind-set facilitates Moral\nBalancing (behaving ethically or unethically decreases the\nlikelihood of engaging in the same type of behavior later),\nwhereas a rule-based mind-set facilitates Moral Consistency\n(engaging in an ethical or unethical behavior increases the\nlikelihood of engaging in the same type of behavior later).\nOur objective was to look at the evolution of moral choice\nacross a series of scenarios and so explore if these moral\npatterns (Balancing vs. Consistency) are maintained over\ntime. The results of three studies showed that Moral\nBalancing is not maintained over time. On the other hand,\nMoral Consistency could be maintained over time, if the\nmind-set was reinforced before making a new moral\njudgment (but not otherwise).","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[{"word":"Prosocial Choices; Moral Behavior; Ethical\nMind-sets; Ethical Behavior; Decision Making"}],"section":"Papers","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/4rb6k4cb","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Albert","middle_name":"","last_name":"Barque-Duran","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, City University London","department":""},{"first_name":"Emmanuel","middle_name":"M","last_name":"Pothos","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, City University London","department":""},{"first_name":"James","middle_name":"M","last_name":"Yearsley","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, City University London","department":""},{"first_name":"James","middle_name":"A","last_name":"Hampton","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, City University London","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2015-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/25408/galley/15032/download/"}]}
