{"pk":25445,"title":"Promoting Comprehension of Health Information among Older Adults","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Understanding and acting on online health information is\nincreasingly a pre-requisite for patient self-care. Therefore,\ninadequate health literacy is a barrier to self-care among older\nadults with chronic illness. The goal of our study was to\nimprove older adults‚Äô comprehension of online health\ninformation. We extracted typical health texts from multiple\ncredible health websites, and systematically improved the\ntexts in terms of, content, language, organization and design.\nResults showed that older adults better understood the revised\npassages than the typical ones, in terms of their reading\nefficiency (time per unit of information uptake). Intervention\nbenefits were greater for older adults with more domainspecific\nhealth knowledge, suggesting that knowledge\nfacilitated the comprehension of health information in the\nrevised texts.
