{"pk":25476,"title":"Modeling Relational Priming and Multiplicative Reasoning with Rational Numbers","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Previous research on multiplicative reasoning has shown that\nfor whole numbers, understanding of division is intimately\nlinked to multiplication, as retrieval of division facts is often\naccomplished through reverse multiplication. We recently\nextended this research to rational numbers, and found that\ninverse multiplication problems can serve as primes for one\nanother (e.g., a √ó b/a = a primes b √ó a/b = b) when the\nsecond multiplier is expressed as a fraction, but not when it is\nexpressed as a decimal. In the current paper we propose a\nprocess model of how such relational priming takes place, and\nreport two experiments that test the limits of this priming\neffect. The first varies the format of the equations as fractions\nor a total division equation, and shows that priming is only\nobserved using the fraction format; the second varies the\nmultiplicative complexity of the factors in the equations, and\nshows that priming requires a common factor linking the\nsuccessive problems.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[{"word":"multiplicative reasoning; relational priming;\nnumber concepts; fractions and decimals; mathematics\neducation"}],"section":"Papers","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/63s5d8sn","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Melissa","middle_name":"","last_name":"deWolf","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles","department":""},{"first_name":"Miriam","middle_name":"","last_name":"Bassok","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, University of Washington","department":""},{"first_name":"Keith","middle_name":"J","last_name":"Holyoak","name_suffix":"","institution":"Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2015-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/25476/galley/15100/download/"}]}
