Studying the\nInfluence of Disgust and Amusement on Alignment in Interactive Reference","subtitle":null,"abstract":"The influence of emotion on (the early stages of) speech\nproduction processes, notably content selection has received\nlittle scholarly attention. Goudbeek & Krahmer (2012) found\nevidence for alignment at the conceptual level: speakers may\nstart using a dispreferred attribute over a preferred attribute in\ntheir referring expressions when they are primed by a pre-\nrecorded female voice in a preceding interaction. The current\nstudy aimed to assess the role of emotion (using amusement\nand disgust) in alignment, while simultaneously replicating\nthis finding in a more naturalistic setting involving two\nhuman participants in naturalistic dialogue. Our results\nreplicate the findings by Goudbeek & Krahmer (2012),\ngeneralizing their findings to a much more naturalistic setting.\nIn addition, we found that amused, but not disgusted speakers\ntend to use the preferred attribute more to describe objects to\ntheir conversational partner.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[{"word":"alignment; egocentricity bias"},{"word":"attentional bias"},{"word":"emotion; amusement; disgust; speech production; referential\nexpressions"},{"word":"psycholinguistics."}],"section":"Posters: Papers","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/3hs038dv","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Charlotte","middle_name":"","last_name":"Out","name_suffix":"","institution":"Tilburg University,","department":""},{"first_name":"Martijn","middle_name":"","last_name":"Goudbeek","name_suffix":"","institution":"Tilburg University,","department":""},{"first_name":"Emiel","middle_name":"","last_name":"Krahmer","name_suffix":"","institution":"Tilburg University,","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2017-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/27309/galley/16945/download/"}]}
