{"pk":32924,"title":"Tabletop: An Emergent, Stochastic Model of Analogy-Making","subtitle":null,"abstract":"This paper describes Tabletop, a computer progam that models human analogy-making in a micro-world consisting of a small table covered with ordinary table objects. We argue for the necessity, even in this simple domain, of an architecture that builds its own representations by means of a continual interaction between an associative network of fixed concepts (the Slipnet) and simple low-level perceptual agents (codelets), that relies on local processing and (simulated) parallelism, and that is fundamentally stochastic. Several problems solved by the Tabletop program are used to illustrate these principles.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[],"section":"Poster Presentations","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8gb425gz","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Robert","middle_name":"M.","last_name":"French","name_suffix":"","institution":"Indiana University","department":""},{"first_name":"Douglas","middle_name":"R.","last_name":"Hofstadter","name_suffix":"","institution":"Indiana University","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"1991-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/32924/galley/23984/download/"}]}
