An eye-tracking methodology was \nused, in which eye movement latencies to real objects in \na visual display are taken as a measure of on-line \nreference resolution. Results indicate that presupposed \ncontrast sets are being computed on-line, and can be used \nto speed reference resolution by narrowing the referential \ndomain of an utterance. In addition, presupposed contrast \nsets appear to play a role in managing attention in the \nprocessing of a discourse.","language":"eng","license":{"name":"","short_name":"","text":null,"url":""},"keywords":[],"section":"17","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/0xx3v7wg","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Julie","middle_name":"C.","last_name":"Sedivy","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Rochester","department":""},{"first_name":"Michael","middle_name":"K.","last_name":"Tanenhaus","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Rochester","department":""},{"first_name":"Michael","middle_name":"","last_name":"Spivey-Knowlton","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Rochester","department":""},{"first_name":"Kathleen","middle_name":"","last_name":"Eberhard","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Rochester","department":""},{"first_name":"Gregory","middle_name":"N.","last_name":"Carlson","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Rochester","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"1995-01-01T18:00:00Z","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/33093/galley/24154/download/"}]}
