As a result of the growing influence of conservative interests on the educational priorities of state and federal government, it is increasingly important to examine the implications of such initiatives as the ABOR, as one example of the conservative educational agenda. This paper explores the ways in which one alternative high school (Progressive Secondary School) critically subverts the discourse of traditional assessment methods by emphasizing personal growth rather than comparative scores, and using assessment to facilitate ongoing dialogue between students, teachers, and parents. Instead of getting letter grades and taking standardized tests, students at Progressive receive personalized narrative evaluations and rubrics, and must publicly defend their work in biennial presentations. Utilizing critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2003), I show how Progressive’s alternative assessment methods encompass various genres, allow for multiple voices, and bring evaluation into what Habermas has labeled the “public sphere”. Ultimately, I argue that a shift in the overall discourse of assessment can lead to a deeper shift in perception about the uses and value of evaluation in schools.","language":"en","license":null,"keywords":[{"word":"Assessment"},{"word":"high school"},{"word":"public sphere"},{"word":"Critical discourse analysis"}],"section":"Articles","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8hn8h2p0","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Sylvia","middle_name":"S.","last_name":"Bagley","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of California, Los Angeles","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2007-05-03T10:00:00+03:00","date_accepted":"2007-05-03T10:00:00+03:00","date_published":"2008-02-08T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/gseis_interactions/article/3048/galley/1841/download/"}]},{"pk":3038,"title":"Review: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Knowledge Management edited by David J. Educators either serve the interest of ruling elites and help the maintenance of ideological hegemony or counter-serve hegemonic forces by breaking the cycle of dehumanization and oppression. In essence, the digital divide discourse and its popularization were perceived as a product of ideological hegemony. In order to analyze the digital divide discourse, this paper looked at the current literature related to digital divide, and then examined technology’s historical relations with the hegemonic power structure. The contemporary United States society and its dominant discourse on the digital divide and how other social determinants related to the class structure are being ignored in the process of approaching this social problem are also analyzed. Finally the paper discussed how educators need to deal with and challenge educational inequities in the new alteration process of hegemonic structure that has a strong dialectical relation with the new technological advancement. This discussion is one attempt to participate in its rearrangement.","language":"en","license":null,"keywords":[{"word":"digital divide"},{"word":"digital divide discourse"},{"word":"educators as intellectuals"},{"word":"Gramsci"},{"word":"hegemony"}],"section":"Articles","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/85m2z8j2","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Ilhan","middle_name":"","last_name":"Kucukaydin","name_suffix":"","institution":"Penn State University - Harrisburg","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Elizabeth","middle_name":"J.","last_name":"Tisdell","name_suffix":"","institution":"Penn State University - Harrisburg","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2007-05-02T10:00:00+03:00","date_accepted":"2007-05-02T10:00:00+03:00","date_published":"2008-02-08T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/gseis_interactions/article/3047/galley/1840/download/"}]},{"pk":4921,"title":"A Novel Behavioral Test Battery to Assess Global Drug Effects Using the Zebrafish","subtitle":null,"abstract":"The zebrafish (\nDanio rerio\n) has been at the forefront of neurobiological research and is steadily gaining favor as a model for behavioral applications. The ease of handling, high yield of progeny, and efficient mode of drug delivery make this species a particularly useful model for behavior. Here, we append to the growing body of literature on zebrafish behavior by introducing a novel behavioral battery of tests aimed at identifying drug induced alterations in social and motoric behaviors. In a series of experiments, zebrafish were exposed to MK-801 (0, 2 μM, 20 μM), SFK 38393 (0, 10 μM, 100 μM), and ethanol (0, 0.5%, 1.0%) for one hour and overt locomotor behaviors were scored. Following a one-hour treatment exposure, circling behavior (a thigmotaxic display typical of dysregulated glutamate function) was scored from videotape at specific time points over a 37-minute session. In a separate experiment the zebrafish’s natural tendency to shoal (social display) was analyzed using a novel open-field paradigm that examined fish distribution over quadrants. Most notably, MK-801 (20 μM) significantly increased circling behavior compared to controls. However, shoaling displays were disrupted when zebrafish were exposed to both MK-801 and SKF 38393 (20 μM and 100 μM respectively). Our results, in part, complement existing knowledge about zebrafish behavior following acute drug exposure. Additionally, our novel approach to assessing shoaling behavior, reported here, introduces an alternative view of social/group behavior in the zebrafish that is sensitive to both NMDA and dopaminergic manipulation.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. In the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta—the tidal freshwater reach of the San Francisco Estuary—such movements are key to losses of fish and other organisms to entrainment in large water-export facilities. We used the Delta Simulation Model-2 hydrodynamic model and its particle tracking model to examine the principal determinants of entrainment losses to the export facilities and how movement of fish through the Delta may be influenced by flow. We modeled 936 scenarios for 74 different conditions of flow, diversions, tides, and removable barriers to address seven questions regarding hydrodynamics and entrainment risk in the Delta. Tide had relatively small effects on fate and residence time of particles. Release location and hydrology interacted to control particle fate and residence time. The ratio of flow into the export facilities to freshwater flow into the Delta (export:inflow or EI ratio) was a useful predictor of entrainment probability if the model were allowed to run long enough to resolve particles’ ultimate fate. Agricultural diversions within the Delta increased total entrainment losses and altered local movement patterns. Removable barriers in channels of the southern Delta and gates in the Delta Cross Channel in the northern Delta had minor effects on particles released in the rivers above these channels. A simulation of losses of larval delta smelt showed substantial cumulative losses depending on both inflow and export flow. A simulation mimicking mark–recapture experiments on Chinook salmon smolts suggested that both inflow and export flow may be important factors determining survival of salmon in the upper estuary. To the extent that fish behave passively, this model is probably suitable for describing Delta-wide movement, but it is less suitable for smaller scales or alternative configurations of the Delta.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. Previous research has shown this is generally true in the upper San Francisco Estuary, California, USA; however, one endemic species of high management importance, delta smelt (\nHypomesus transpacificus\n), has shown ambiguous population responses to river inflow variation. We hypothesized that population-level associations with abiotic habitat metrics have not been apparent because the effects occur seasonally, and at spatial scales smaller than the entire upper San Francisco Estuary. We tested this hypothesis by applying regression techniques and principal components analysis (PCA) to a long-term data-set (1970–2004) of summertime fish catch, and concurrently measured water quality (specific conductance, Secchi disk depth, and water temperature). We found that all three water quality variables predicted delta smelt occurrence, and we identified three distinct geographic regions that had similar long-term trends in delta smelt capture probabilities. The primary habitat region was centered on the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers; delta smelt relative abundance was typically highest in the Confluence region throughout the study period. There were two marginal habitat regions—including one centered on Suisun Bay—where specific conductance was highest and delta smelt relative abundance varied with specific conductance. The second marginal habitat region was centered on the San Joaquin River and southern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The San Joaquin region had the warmest water temperatures and the highest water clarity, which increased strongly in this region during 1970–2004. In the San Joaquin region, where delta smelt relative abundance was correlated with water clarity, catches declined rapidly to zero from 1970–1978 and remained consistently near zero thereafter. However, when we combined these regional results into estuary-wide means, there were no significant relationships between any of the water quality variables and delta smelt relative abundance. Our findings support the hypothesis that basic water quality parameters are predictors of delta smelt relative abundance, but only at regional spatial scales.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. We recorded manipulative events of six captive yellow-breasted capuchin monkeys and later compared these results to their performance in a tool using task. The frequency of time each animal was involved with manipulative events was not correlated to the number of tool-using events displayed by them, even when we analyzed the males only (the most frequent manipulators). This result goes against the idea that tool use in \nCebus\n is a product of both manipulative propensities and tendency to use objects. Most likely, the evolution of tool use in \nCebus\n was due to a complex combination of factors, belonging to various behavioral systems, not only to the foraging one.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. Previous studies have indicated that the primary food supply for metazoans in the Delta is phytoplankton productivity, and the long-term decrease in phytoplankton over the last few decades may very well play a role in the long-term decline of pelagic fish abundance. Regional phytoplankton biomass trends during 1996–2005, however, are positive in the Delta and neutral in Suisun Bay, the two major sub-regions of the upper estuary. The trend in Delta primary productivity is also positive. Changes in phytoplankton biomass and production during the last decade are therefore unlikely to be the cause of these more recent metazoan declines. The main source of interannual phytoplankton variability in the Delta during 1996–2005, including the upward trend, appears to have been freshwater flow variability and its effect on particle residence time. This conclusion is supported by trend analyses; the concurrence of these time trends at widely-separated stations; empirical models at the annual and monthly time scales; particle residence time estimates; and experience from other estuaries. A significant temperature increase was also noticed, at least partially independent of flow changes, but its net effect on the phytoplankton community is unknown because of differential effects on growth and loss processes. Phytoplankton biomass in Suisun Bay, in contrast to the Delta, did not increase during 1996–2005. Consistent with this observation, Suisun Bay phytoplankton exhibited relatively low responsiveness to flow variability. This behavior differs from earlier chlorophyll-flow relationships reported in the literature. The reason appears to be the invasion of Suisun Bay by a clam—\nCorbula amurensis\n—in 1986, which has since maintained the phytoplankton community mostly at low levels by vigorous filter-feeding. In the past, flows into Suisun Bay generally diluted the higher phytoplankton concentrations within the bay; now they bring in higher phytoplankton concentrations from upstream. The supply of phytoplankton carbon to Suisun Bay has always been dominated by allochthonous sources, at least for mean flow conditions. Now this dominance must be even more pronounced.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. Preferential association among kin is well-researched in numerous terrestrial species, but has only recently been investigated in cetaceans. This study brings another species into the body of work being formed on the influence of relatedness on cetacean relationships. The association indices of 26 individuals with known relatives in a population of Atlantic spotted dolphins, \nStenella frontalis\n, were compiled from encounters in the Bahamas from 2002-2006. Analysis demonstrated that there is preferential association among kin in this population. Mean association indices were found to be significantly higher within families than between families, and there was a positive correlation between relatedness and coefficient of association. However, because mountain winters and springs are warming, on average, precipitation as snowfall relative to rain is decreasing, and snowmelt is earlier. The changes are stronger at mid-elevations than at higher elevations. The result is that the water supply provided by snowpack is diminishing. In this paper, we describe principal hydrologic responses to climatic and spatial geologic variations as gleaned from a series of observations including snowpack, stream-flow, and bedrock geology. Our analysis focused on peak (maximum) and base (minimum) daily discharge of the annual snowmelt-driven hydrographs from 18 Sierra Nevada watersheds and 24 stream gage locations using standard correlation methods. Insights into the importance of the relative magnitudes of peak flow and soil water storage led us to develop a hydrologic classification of mountain watersheds based on runoff versus base flow as a percentage of peak flow. Our findings suggest that watersheds with a stronger base flow response store more soil water than watersheds with a stronger peak-flow response. Further, the influence of antecedent wet or dry years is greater in watersheds with high base flow, measured as a percentage of peak flow. The strong correlation between 1) the magnitude of peak flow, and 2) snow water equivalent can be used to predict peak flow weeks in advance. A weaker but similar correlation can be used to predict the magnitude of base flow months in advance. Most of the watersheds show a trend that peak flow is occurring earlier in the year.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. This rest strategy allows dolphins to maintain continuous vigilance of their external environment. Dolphins in the care of humans exhibit different behaviors while presumably at rest, including floating at the surface, lying at the bottom, and swimming at very slow speeds in stereotyped patterns. Dolphin mothers in the care of humans have been reported to “not rest” and swim continuously for extended periods of time (weeks or even months) when their calves are first born. The current study examined the night-time rest patterns and vigilance of five female bottlenose dolphins before and after parturition. By differentiating between two types of resting behaviors (floating and slow swimming), we found that mothers altered their rest strategy depending on the parturition state. Floating was only observed at high levels preparturition. In contrast, mothers primarily exhibited active swims (a vigilant state) the first two weeks, post-parturition. The remaining six weeks were characterized by a steady increase in slow swimming (a resting, vigilance state). This change in swim behavior may be associated with neonatal development and may allow mothers to sustain high levels of vigilance for extended periods of time. The results of a behavioral test of vigilance indicated that the mothers also increased their vigilance level post-parturition. Mothers sustained their increased response rate over the eight-week post-parturition period, demonstrating that dolphin mothers maintain high levels of vigilance for an extended period of time.","language":"en","license":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0","short_name":"CC BY 4.0","text":"Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. Instrumental reasons, though quite important to these students, appeared to be outweighed by the integrative ones. Given that South Korean graduates’ linguistic, cultural, and educational differences affect their academic writing practices in a North American academic setting, these factors must be explained to examine their influence on students’ writing. This paper will briefly describe the linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds of South Korean L2 graduate students in terms of both their L1 and L2 writing. Second, it will scrutinize the previous research that focuses on how L2 students in general become socialized in North American university settings. Last, based on the discussion, suggestions will be made for deeper investigation of how L2 students in general and Korean students in particular become better socialized, focusing on their access to resources.","language":"eng","license":null,"keywords":[],"section":"Theme Section - Feature Articles","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5ws8m03d","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Miyoung","middle_name":"","last_name":"Nam","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Cincinnati","department":""},{"first_name":"Mary","middle_name":"S.","last_name":"Benedetti","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Cincinnati","department":""},{"first_name":"Mina","middle_name":"","last_name":"Kim","name_suffix":"","institution":"San Francisco State University","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2008-01-01T20:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/catesoljournal/article/36265/galley/27117/download/"}]},{"pk":36275,"title":"Meeting the Language Needs of Immigrant Health Professionals: An Innovative Approach","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Immigrant health professionals in the US seeking to reenter or advance in health professions need more than English medical terminology to effectively communicate and succeed in the workplace. And yet little is known about the relationship between their spoken and written discourse. Thus, this paper discusses a case study that explored the relationship of spoken and written discourse of a Generation 1.5 ESL student, whom we call Mary, in a college ESL composition classroom. The findings revealed that Mary employed speechlike features for her writing (i.e., use of colloquial language and lack of explicitness in linguistic and content terms). These findings indicate that Mary seemed to write the way she spoke, which contributed to making her writing informal, implicit, and less persuasive. In addition to examining the language features, we explored the effect of explicit instruction on the difference between spoken and written discourse. Such instruction turned out to be partially effective. Findings arising from this study suggest that Generation 1.5 ESL students such as Mary employ two approaches (i.e., writing/speaking and reading/writing connections) to improving writing.","language":"eng","license":null,"keywords":[],"section":"Theme Section - Feature Articles","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/95j3w2wp","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Michelle","middle_name":"","last_name":"Jeffries","name_suffix":"","institution":"Spring International Language Center, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville","department":""},{"first_name":"Youngjoo","middle_name":"","last_name":"Yi","name_suffix":"","institution":"Georgia State University, Atlanta","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2008-01-01T20:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/catesoljournal/article/36266/galley/27118/download/"}]},{"pk":36278,"title":"Step Forward 1: Multilevel Activity Book - J. Historically, ESL professionals have had to rely on intuitions about language use and frequency to guide them in making these decisions. Recently, however, corpus linguistics studies have provided information about the language actually used by speakers and writers in natural situations, including the relative frequencies of features and words. Because more frequent grammatical structures and words will be more useful to students both receptively and in production, this information has great potential for advancing ESL instruction. This article emphasizes the importance of frequency information for the teaching of ESL and offers suggestions for change. In addition, it provides practical applications for teaching certain features and words that corpus linguistics has shown to be quite frequent; their frequency, however, is not yet commonly reflected in materials and practice.","language":"eng","license":null,"keywords":[],"section":"CATESOL Exchanges","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/9v95p2zm","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Janis","middle_name":"","last_name":"van Zante","name_suffix":"","institution":"Independent Materials Developer, Orange","department":""},{"first_name":"Robin","middle_name":"","last_name":"Persiani","name_suffix":"","institution":"Sierra College, Rocklin","department":""}],"date_submitted":null,"date_accepted":null,"date_published":"2008-01-01T20:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"PDF","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/catesoljournal/article/36268/galley/27120/download/"}]},{"pk":16296,"title":"Accuracy of ED Bedside Ultrasound for Identification of Gallstones: Retrospective Analysis of 575 Studies","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Study Objective: To determine the ability of emergency department (ED) physicians to diagnose cholelithiasis with bedside ultrasound. Medical therapy was initiated but failed to improve her symptoms, and revision amputation was ultimately performed. The patient’s final diagnosis was digital ischemia due to secondary Raynaud’s Phenomenon (RP). The authors discuss diagnosis, complications, and treatment of this relatively uncommon disorder. Utilization of Local Anesthetics in Infant Lumbar Punctures","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Background: Lumbar Puncture (LP) is an invasive procedure frequently used to diagnose meningitis among the pediatric population. Neonates and infants have not routinely received local anesthesia prior to LP. Study Objective: To determine whether emergency medicine physicians and pediatricians use local analgesics on neonates and infants prior to performing an LP and to identify which local anesthetics, if any, were used. Methods: Prospective, cohort study of all infants, six months of age or less, that received an LP in the emergency department (ED) or inpatient pediatric units for suspected meningitis during a period of year at a university tertiary care hospital. Results: A total sample population of 111 infants that received an LP within the study period. A control population of 42 adults received an LP. Only 40.4% (45/111) of the infants received local analgesia prior to LP: either 1% lidocaine, EMLA or a combination of the two. Infants were less likely to receive lidocaine or EMLA prior to LP compared to adult subjects (OR= 0.27; 95% CI0.12 to 0.62). No neonates that were less than one month of age received local procedural anesthesia by emergency medicine or pediatric physicians. ED physicians’ use of local anesthesia prior to LP increased with increasing age of the infant. The pediatricians in this study used local anesthesia prior to LP when the infant was at least five months of age. Discussion: The data objectively support recent literature regarding the under use or lack of use of analgesia prior to LP among neonates and infants. Local anesthetics should be used routinely without exception prior to performing an LP in the pediatric population.","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[{"word":"pediatric procedural analgesia lumbar puncture"}],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/94s7z6j4","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Julie","middle_name":"","last_name":"Gorchynski","name_suffix":"","institution":"Texas A&M, Corpus Christi","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Worth","middle_name":"","last_name":"Everett","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Pennsylvania","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Linda","middle_name":"","last_name":"Prebil","name_suffix":"","institution":"Pharmaceutical Product Development Incorporated","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2007-05-08T10:00:00+03:00","date_accepted":"2007-05-08T10:00:00+03:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16307/galley/8208/download/"}]},{"pk":16446,"title":"Use of Therapeutic Hypothermia for Comatose Survivors of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Arizona Emergency Departments","subtitle":null,"abstract":"","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/2hg9s5n5","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Quinn","middle_name":"","last_name":"Snyder","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Arizona","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Katherine","middle_name":"M","last_name":"Hiller","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Arizona","department":"None"},{"first_name":"James","middle_name":"","last_name":"Bogert","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Arizona","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Art","middle_name":"","last_name":"Sanders","name_suffix":"","institution":"University of Arizona","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2008-02-17T10:00:00+02:00","date_accepted":"2008-02-17T10:00:00+02:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16446/galley/8323/download/"}]},{"pk":16503,"title":"Utilization of the Rapid HIV Test in the Emergency Department","subtitle":null,"abstract":"","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/7bz0v469","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Patricia","middle_name":"","last_name":"Kahn","name_suffix":"","institution":"Arrowhead Regional Medical Center","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Rodney","middle_name":"","last_name":"Borger","name_suffix":"","institution":"Arrowhead Regional Medical Center","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Dorian","middle_name":"","last_name":"Snyder","name_suffix":"","institution":"Arrowhead Regional Medical Center","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Prentice","middle_name":"","last_name":"Tom","name_suffix":"","institution":"Arrowhead Regional Medical Center","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2008-02-18T10:00:00+02:00","date_accepted":"2008-02-18T10:00:00+02:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16503/galley/8350/download/"}]},{"pk":16297,"title":"Validation of the Social Security Death Index (SSDI): An Important Readily-Available Outcomes Database for Researchers","subtitle":null,"abstract":"Study Objective: To determine the accuracy of the online Social Security Death Index (SSDI) for determining death outcomes. Methods: We selected 30 patients who were determined to be dead and 90 patients thought to be alive after an ED visit as determined by a web-based searched of the SSDI. For those thought to be dead we requested death certificates. We then had a research coordinator blinded to the results of the SSDI search, complete direct follow-up by contacting the patients, family or primary care physicians to determine vital status. To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the SSDI for death at six months in this cohort, we used direct follow-up as the criterion reference and calculated 95% confidence intervals. Results: Direct follow-up was completed for 90% (108 of 120) of the patients. For those patients 20 were determined to be dead and 88 alive. The dead were more likely to be male (57%) and older [(mean age 83.9 (95% CI 79.1 – 88.7) vs. 60.9 (95% CI 56.4 – 65.4) for those alive]. The sensitivity of the SSDI for those with completed direct follow-up was 100% (95% CI 91 -100%) with specificity of 100% (95% CI 98-100%). Of the 12 patients who were not able to be contacted through direct follow-up, the SSDI indicated that 10 were dead and two were alive. Conclusions: SSDI is an accurate measure of death outcomes and appears to have the advantage of finding deaths among patients lost to follow-up.","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[{"word":"Outcomes research"},{"word":"death"},{"word":"online search"},{"word":"SSDI"}],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/88s8r4c4","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"James","middle_name":"","last_name":"Quinn","name_suffix":"","institution":"Division of Emergency Medicine, Stanford University","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Nathan","middle_name":"","last_name":"Kramer","name_suffix":"","institution":"Division of Emergency Medicine, University of California, San Francisco","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Daniel","middle_name":"","last_name":"McDermott","name_suffix":"","institution":"Division of Emergency Medicine, University of California, San Francisco","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2007-05-29T10:00:00+03:00","date_accepted":"2007-05-29T10:00:00+03:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16297/galley/8198/download/"}]},{"pk":16437,"title":"Validity of Self-Reported Hypertensive Status in the Multiethnic Cohort","subtitle":null,"abstract":"","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/7cp9k222","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Kristi","middle_name":"A","last_name":"Stanley","name_suffix":"","institution":"USC/Keck School of Medicine","department":"None"},{"first_name":"Sean","middle_name":"O","last_name":"Henderson","name_suffix":"","institution":"USC/Keck School of Medicine","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2008-02-17T10:00:00+02:00","date_accepted":"2008-02-17T10:00:00+02:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16437/galley/8318/download/"}]},{"pk":16381,"title":"Welcome to the Resident/Student/Fellow Section of WestJEM!","subtitle":null,"abstract":"","language":"en","license":{"name":"none","short_name":"none","text":"","url":"http://google.com"},"keywords":[{"word":"Resident Section"}],"section":"Article","is_remote":true,"remote_url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/61j4d1vg","frozenauthors":[{"first_name":"Laleh","middle_name":"","last_name":"Gharahbaghian","name_suffix":"","institution":"Division of Emergency Medicine, Stanford University Medical Center","department":"None"}],"date_submitted":"2007-08-28T10:00:00+03:00","date_accepted":"2007-08-28T10:00:00+03:00","date_published":"2008-01-01T10:00:00+02:00","render_galley":null,"galleys":[{"label":"","type":"pdf","path":"https://journalpub.escholarship.org/westjem/article/16381/galley/8282/download/"}]},{"pk":16348,"title":"Wide Complex Tachycardias: Understanding this Complex Condition Part 1 -
