            "title": "Changes in Veterans Health Administration Emergency Department Visits During Two Years of COVID-19",

            "abstract": "<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> To better understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emergency department (ED) utilization, we examined two years of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) ED visits. Emergent and non-emergent ED visits were examined separately to understand the impact of systems-level changes in healthcare delivery. </p>\n<p><strong>Methods:</strong> In this retrospective, observational cohort study we examined ED visits in 111 EDs within the VHA from March 2018–February 2022. Primary outcome was the count of emergent and non-emergent ED visits, using incident rate ratios (IRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to examine ED visits during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic in eight separate quarters, compared to two years of seasonally equivalent quarters before COVID-19.</p>\n<p><strong>Results:</strong> Over the four-year period, US veterans made 8,057,011 ED visits, with 54.7% in the eight pre-COVID-19 quarters, and 45.3% in the first eight quarters during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both emergent and non-emergent visit counts decreased in each of the first eight quarters during COVID-19 when compared to their respective pre-COVID-19 baseline. The change in emergent visits ranged between -26.9% (March-May 2020; IRR 0.73, 95% CI 0.72-0.74) and -7.0% (June-August 2021; IRR 0.93, 95% CI 0.92-0.94). The change in non-emergent visits ranged between -33.0% (March-May 2020; IRR 0.67, 95% CI 0.67-0.67) and -5.7% (June-August 2021; IRR 0.94, 95% CI 0.94-0.95). After the first six months of the pandemic, emergent ED visits had a sustained greater decrease compared to non-emergent visits.</p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> As of 2022, ED visits had not returned to pre-pandemic baselines, and our results suggest that emergent visits have sustained a greater decrease even in the second year of the pandemic compared to their respective, seasonally equivalent pre-pandemic quarters from March 2018–February 2020. The finding that emergent visits decreased more than non-emergent is notable given that system-level changes in care delivery, particularly a shift toward use of telehealth, would be expected to have a greater impact on non-emergent care. More work is needed to understand whether acute care is being forgone altogether, as well as the subsequent impact.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is an embryological defect of the diaphragm that typically presents in the neonatal period with respiratory distress.  However, delayed presentations do occur rarely and can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.</p>\n<p><strong>Case Report:</strong> We describe the case of a 9-month-old male who presented to the emergency department with respiratory distress and was subsequently diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.</p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> This case underscores the importance of considering CDH in the differential diagnosis of pediatric patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with unexplained respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms, even beyond the neonatal period.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p><strong>Introduction</strong>: Infantile subglottic hemangioma is a rare and serious condition characterized by stridor, respiratory distress, and a barking cough. This condition poses a significant risk as it can lead to life-threatening airway obstruction. </p>\n<p><strong>Case Report: </strong>We present a patient who was diagnosed in the ED with moderate laryngomalacia via laryngoscopy by otolaryngology and discharged; he returned to the ED the next day with worsening symptoms of recurrent stridor, difficulty feeding, and worsening respiratory distress. A second laryngoscopic exam performed on the return ED visit revealed a subglottic mass which was later identified as a left-sided subglottic hemangioma via bronchoscopy and MRI. The patient was treated with propranolol and discharged from the inpatient unit with dermatology and otolaryngology follow-up. </p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Infantile subglottic hemangioma is a rare but serious cause of respiratory distress in infants, posing a risk of airway obstruction. It should be considered in the ED, particularly for patients under two years of age, who present with recurrent stridor and respiratory distress and do not respond to standard treatments for croup or laryngomalacia.</p>",

In this paper several methods that can be used to establish true north as well as the azimuth of a sightline are considered.             "abstract": "<p>Since the nineteenth century and with greater intensity in the twentieth century, an ephemeral graphic imagery invaded everyday life on a previously unknown scale. These objects printed on paper with generally industrial techniques emerged linked to the daily, administrative, economic and pedagogical dimension of urban life and the consumer society of industrial capitalism. Often destined to be discarded after a specific use, some of them remained in public or private collections and were preserved for their symbolic, aesthetic or emotional value. In Argentina, the vast majority of these prints have been lost, neglected, or found in fragmented collections, rarely known, dispersed in sets grouped by their use or theme. They have been rejected by high culture and relegated by academic research. However, these devices, as part of the common graphic heritage, shaped the visual and material culture of the past, and treasure experiences and a collective social memory. For these reasons, the Profumo Archive represents a unique case in the local sphere, as it brings together a collection that, due to its features and dimensions, stands out from other public or private collections in the country.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p>Architecture’s fate has been sealed, and our continued resistance to its destiny of demise has led designers and engineers onto a path of forging local order at the price of global disorder. This disorder does not remain constrained to new corners of space, however. It haunts us from afar, promising to creep back and reclaim the places we’ve thought to made our own. Lessons from Native People, avant-garde Japanese modernists, and even Burning Man artists show us how we can embrace ephemerality and plan for a more cyclical architecture that’s better attuned to the planet’s energy flows. A high-level trajectory is proposed to help steer us away from the cliff of irreversible climate collapse, but it requires us to relinquish contemporary conceptions of how architecture ought to be built.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p>Diana Taylor defines the archival “as documents, maps, literary texts [...] all those items supposedly resistant to change” (19), and the repertoire as “[enacting] embodied memory [...] all those acts usually thought of as ephemeral, nonreproducible knowledge” (19-20). The archive is marked by human intervention; the decisions about what is preserved circumscribe the finder’s agency and their means “to find out” (20). In turn, the “being there” of repertoire animates and amplifies this archival non-neutrality. But, some performance artifacts seem to resist this compartmentalization, functioning as a singularity of archive and repertoire and in doing so, cease to be “well-behaved.” This essay will examine the “unruliness” of Baccio Cecchi’s Descrizione dell’ apparato e de gli’intermedi fatti per la storia dell’ Esaltazione della Croce (1592) as it oscillates between archive and repertoire. Ostensibly a description of a temporary theatre and the intermedi performed between the acts of Giovanmaria Cecchi’s L’esaltazione della Croce during the 1589 wedding of Ferdinand de’ Medici and Christine of Lorraine, the descrizione expresses what is meant to be evoked by that space, and what knowledge—religious, political, and symbolic—is transmitted in the course of the performance. As a record of Baccio Cecchi’s presence and experience, and in its reliance on a specific place and moment of the performance, this essay willdemostrate how the document functions as both archive and repertoire. The tension between the necessary witnessing of the repertoire and the optional engagement of the archive constitutes the disruptive centre of Baccio’s descrizione .</p>",

            "abstract": "<p>Shifting economic and political conditions in many urban areas have resulted in queer spaces disappearing at an increasing rate. These bars, clubs, bookstores and other architectural environments occupied by various members of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community are central to a history of sexuality. Their subsequent absence signals a potential erasure of significant aspects of personal and collective memory. As a response to this slow loss, Berlin-based artist and architect Author 2 has employed architectural scanning technology to create highly detailed, digital models of various edifices, interiors, public spaces and monuments in the German city. The three-dimensional models are then processed as key components of two parallel projects: a website that enables visitors to explore a selection of spaces paired with recorded interviews and a virtual reality (VR) artwork animating the architectural archive. In this conversation, Busch discusses the ongoing project Scanning the Horizon alongside the application LiDAR laser scanning techniques to create highly accurate visualizations of various built structures throughout Berlin and convey distinctly queer experiences of space. The artist defines how publicity, existing access and other protocols shape the selection of spaces featured in the project. Queer tactics of cruising architecture via the equipment are further expanded to address the theoretical potential of the limitations of the technology and the aesthetic experience of the website and VR work. In this regard, the growing archive is examined as a repository or remainder of space that simultaneously embraces and counters the ephemerality of LGBTQ2SIA+ records.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p>Participatory art is characterized by a certain openness, inviting members of the audience to fill in the gaps of a work of art that is initiated by one or more visual artists. Processes of interaction, collaboration, and co-production are at the heart of this type of art practice, which started to flourish for the first time—at least in the western world—in the so-called long sixties (starting in the late 1950s and ending in the early 1970s). These temporary processes do not necessarily bring about tangible end products that can or should be preserved for the future. Participatory art projects tend to be focused on the here-and-now and the generated results are mostly characterized by mutability, multiplicity and ephemerality. </p>\n<p> To a certain extent, one needs to accept that these so-called ‘participatairy’ artworks—i.e. works that are both participatory and airy (or ephemeral) in nature—are no longer there and can, in the traditional sense, not be preserved, stored and collected for the future. But that does not mean that we should completely forget about these fleeting works or stop considering (alternative) ways to pass them on and make them ‘last.’ But how does one pass on these ephemeral forms of art, without limiting or stabilizing them? How does one keep them ‘in motion’ to prevent them from vanishing into thin air? And who should take part in these practices of safeguarding and transmission? In this ‘Spotlight article,’ I make an argument for moving from practices of co-production to practices of co-care, and for taking into account the so-called ‘living documents:’ those audience members who once participated in the events in the 1960s and 1970s and can now, when still alive, be considered valuable repositories of data, stories and memories. </p>",

            "abstract": "<p>This study explores language educators’ insights to identify the characteristics of effective professional development programs for K-12 teachers and university instructors seeking to integrate educational technologies into language teaching. In pursuit of this goal, a group of language educators participated in a professional development program designed to enhance their skills in experiential and technological material development in language teaching. After completing the program, educators were invited to evaluate it and provide insights on what characteristics define a successful language teacher professional development program focused on the integration of educational technologies in language teaching. Multiple data sources were analyzed to explore participants’ insights and experiences. Data collection involved written open-ended questions, a focus group conversation, and individual interviews. The findings suggest that participants in the language teacher professional development program emphasize promoting multimodality, preparing teachers for implementation, welcoming teachers’ language learning philosophies, addressing critical perspectives, and presenting examples and resources. The results point to implications for the refinement of language teacher professional development programs, highlighting effective practices that provide continuous and sustainable support post-training, involve teachers in setting the goals of teacher education programs, and take into account their needs and classroom settings.</p>",

            "title": "Similarity Heuristics in the Indian Far Right: How the RSS Obscures Its Operational Scale",

            "abstract": "<p>To conceal their activities, far-right networks manipulate similarity heuristics that suggest their constituent organizations are discrete and coherent. When an organization crafts a public image indicating that only those who wear the same uniforms and march in the same marches are part of an organization, it implies that those who do not, are not. This use of cognitive shortcuts assists far-right organizations in crafting their organizational boundaries to obscure internal divisions of labor. That these disguised internal divisions of labor exist is strong evidence to support a renewed focus on the intra-organizational dynamics of far-right organizations—a focus that pivots from a discursive to a materialist understanding of the far right. I use the case of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), one of the world’s largest far-right organizations, to argue that similarity heuristics disguise far-right connectivity. Paying granular attention to the organizational boundary-making practices of the RSS demonstrates that the true organizational focus of the RSS is its managerial manifestation, rather than its cadre division, which is just one organization the managerial RSS manages. This key finding suggests that scholars must focus on the mechanics of the managerial RSS over the aesthetic phenomenon of the cadre RSS. Such a focus inevitably leads to a network-centric approach to the Indian far right that better captures the mechanics of its mobilization.</p>",

            "abstract": "<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 200%;\">The process of globalization in recent years has ignited an unprecedented level of far-right transatlantic cooperation. Individuals and members of organizations from the United States traveled to Europe intending to establish permanent relations with their ideological cousins, while new ways of online communication enabled extreme right-wing organizations to share ideas and methods of political activism and learn from each other. This phenomenon is observable in Serbia even though bilateral relations with the United States are troubled by the US-led NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. For this reason, anti-American feelings developed among many Serbs, with the far right taking the most uncompromising attitude. Nevertheless, the American far right has inspired and influenced right-wing and even mainstream political organizations in Serbia. The first part of this article examines how extreme right-wing groups in Serbia became exposed to American far-right ideas over the Internet. It also shows how more recent connections have been established between the Serbian far right and alt-right figures from the United States. The second part will examine the effect of the populist right-wing movement created by Donald Trump on Serbian mainstream politics. Trump’s non-interventionism in his first term awakened optimism that better relations between Serbia and the United States are possible while influencing Serbian narratives, ideology, and political practice. </p>",

            "abstract": "<p>Students in India have played politically significant roles both before and since independence. Organizations of both the left and the right attempted and at various points succeeded in mobilizing mass support among students. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the front organizations spawned by it, known collectively as the Sangh, have long been major proponents of Hindu nationalism and have considered students important. Despite this, the Sangh’s relationship with students has not received systematic analysis. This article, using sources primarily produced by the Sangh, analyzes different aspects of the Sangh’s relationship with students between 1947 and 1985. It attempts to demonstrate how during this period, primarily through its student front, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (All India Students’ Council, ABVP), the Sangh was keen on gaining control and influence over student politics. To do so, the ABVP sought to strategically moderate its image. At times the agitational or Hindutva aspects of the organization were foregrounded while on other occasions or even simultaneously the ABVP was portrayed as a peaceful “organization with a difference” that was nonpolitical and interested in service activities. <br><!--EndFragment--></p>",

            "abstract": "<p>The manosphere consists of numerous anti-feminist websites, blogs, and online forums that are now widely considered misogynistic and male supremacist. Among the heterogeneous manosphere groups is the gender-separatist Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW). This article recounts a four-week digital ethnographic study that investigated the emotional and relational dynamics of the Reddit MGTOW forum. I found that rage and fear toward women are central to MGTOW users, as users worked together to reinterpret their feelings of rage and fear to construct a shared narrative that positions women as perpetrators. This worldview obscures the important role masculine ideology plays in male loneliness and disconnection. Giving advice and emotional support on the forum cultivated a sense of belonging and provided a space for men to navigate feelings of loneliness, frustration, and social displacement. Ultimately, MGTOW users expressed a desire to transcend restrictive gender ideals such as husband and father, yet paradoxically still adhered to a conservative, essentialized, and hierarchical gender order. MGTOW users thus performed hybrid masculinity, as they self-conceptualized as victims of society and simultaneously upheld preexisting gender hierarchies that situate femininity as biologically inferior. This study offers a new insight into the magnetism of anti-feminist groups like MGTOW and the ways digital platforms like Reddit amplify such harmful and antagonistic worldviews. Overall, this article highlights the importance of unpacking the affectionate and positive relationships within extremist groups to help explain the emergence into mainstream discourse of male supremacism and an increase of misogynistic beliefs concerning masculinity, femininity, and feminism. </p>",
