The contribution that comparative psychology has made to human factors is demonstrated in this article using the example of the cat, which shows many of the neurophysiological and overt behaviors observed in humans. The article begins with a summary of exemplary basic research which illustrates similarities between the cat and humankind. The summary is followed by a discussion of various applications of these data to improve the human condition.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Courtship behavior in the male guppy (\nPoecilia reticulata\n) was analyzed employing 13 behavioral sequences measured in standardized situations. The stability of these measurements allowed a systematic study of individual differences and of their origins. Factorial analyses lead to two distinguishable main categories of behaviors: one was related to gonopodial swinging; the other to sigmoid display. Variables used to describe gonopodial swinging have only environmental correlates. The additive genetic component was null when estimated by two independent genetic analyses and this result was confirmed by a nonresponse to directional selection. On the contrary, most of the variables used to describe sigmoid display exhibit significant additive genetic components and this was confirmed by the incidence of males exhibiting vs. not exhibiting this behavior in a replicated directional selection. The adaptive significance of the variables is discussed in the light of genetic and observed correlations between the phenotypes.",

            "abstract": "The common garden woodlouse (\nPorcellio scaber\n) is known to alternate turns (correcting behaviour), but the function of this behaviour is only poorly understood. We investigated Hughes' (1967) hypothesis that this behaviour enables woodlice to escape efficiently from unfavourable environmental conditions by considering the effect of contact with a predator, a potentially unfavourable environmental condition that has not been nvestigated previously. In experiments, woodlice alternated turns more frequently after contact with a known predator of woodlice (\nDysdera crocata\n) than after contact with cotton wool or a nonpredatory arthropod (housefly, \nMusca domestica\n).",

            "abstract": "The influences of the physical and social aspects of the environment on temperament in rats are reported in two experiments. In Experiment One changes in animal behavior due to social isolation and enrichment of the physical environment were studied in rats subjected to experimental conditions when they were 25-30 days old. Enrichment of the physical environment led to decreased need for light stimulation and increased exploratory behavior. Social isolation led to an increase in emotional reactivity. Experiment Twowas analogous to Experiment One, diff\"ering only in that 60-70 day-old animals were given the experimental conditions. In this case enriched physical environment and social isolation led to decreased exploratory behavior. Need for light stimulation was aff'ected by the interaction of experimental variables. Need for kinesthetic and tactile stimulation were affected by the social environment. Enrichment of the physical environment also led to a decrease in emotional reactivity in the rats. Our experiments indicate that environmental efl'ects were age-contingent. It is proposed that there is probably a relationship between categories of environment and temperament. Further, our findings draw attention to the possibility of a related evolution of sensory systems and temperamental traits.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Several recent studies have emphasized the role of the maternal call in the attachment process in young nidifugous birds. Prenatal auditory stimulation (audition of sibling calls or self perception) is a determinant factor in the development of the attractivenessc of the maternal assembly call. However, little is known about the role of sibling calls after hatching. In particular, they may be involved in attraction  between broodmatesx and, in this way, they may compete with the maternal call during the development of attachment. These experiments were designed to test the value of postnatal audition of sibling calls (C). Several groups of chicks were placed in an operant conditioning paradigm in which the instrumental response allowed the birds to receive either auditory, visual raudiovisual stimuli. Results demonstrated that audition of sibling calls is appetitive but, surprisingly,the chicks did not evince a clear-cut choice for this stimulus over audition of a pure tone (T). Moreover, chicks were tested in a choice situation between two audiovisual stimuli. The visual stimulus was the vision of their own image in a mirror (V). In this choice situation between \"V + C\" and \"V + T,\" chicks did not choose the \"V-l-C\" stimulus significantly more. Thus, these data, without denying communicative value to sibling calls, support the hypothesis that they do not play an important role in attraction between broodmates and that the main effect of their audition is an activating one.",

Vygotsky wrote: \"The path of definitionand classification followed by psychology over the course of several centuriesled to the fact that of all the chapters of this science, the psychologyof feeling appeared to be fruitless and tedious.\"The merit of E. A. Salzen, the author of \"Thwarted Action State Signalling Theory,\" is that much more important. He has tried to suggesta synthetic theory of emotions that integrates their psychologic, neurologic,and evolutionary-biological aspects. While reading Salzen's paper,I became convinced of the similarity of a number of its theses with myapproach to the nature of emotions, elaborated by me since 1964 (Simonov,1991).",

            "abstract": "Professor Salzen presents us with his theory of emotion. At the outsetof his essay he tells us two things of importance for understanding whatis to follow. First, he asks, \"Why add another grand theory of emotion?\"His answer is that \"the very multiplicity of theories suggest that nonehas a central point of view or a deductive or generative principle thatprovides a satisfactory or complete explanation of the phenomena ofemotion\" (p. 47), We have some difficulty with such an assertion sincemultiplicity of theories do not, on scientific grounds, mean none arenecessarily satisfactory. An understanding of the property of light requiresat least two theories that happen to have the feature that if oneis true, the other is not. Wave and particle theories of light both serveto explain features of phenomena, and physics does quite well with multipleexplanation, even contradictory ones",

            "abstract": "When James (1890) enlarged on his theory of emotion he bemoaned the descriptive nature of psychological works on emotion and wrote \"They give one nowhere a central point of view, or a deductive or generative principle.\" (p. 448 of 1950 Dover reprint). Output of theories after James'publication remained high and continued into the 1930's (see bibliographyby Raines, 1929, 1930, 1931; and historical reviews by Gardiner, Metcalf, & Beebe-Center, 1937; and Hillman, 1960). Then, although theories continued to appear, general interest in emotion flagged and in psychology textbooks the subject was relegated to chapters on motivation. Interest revived in the 1970's and is now high again. In a textbookon emotion Strongman (1973) gave vignettes of about thirty of the better known theories all post-dating James. More appeared by 1980 (Plutchik,1980; Plutchik & Kellerman, 1980; and a bibliography by Rorty, 1980) and this continued unabated in the 80's. Many of these theories are very well known and are examined in the reviews cited. It is neither possible nor necessary to review yet again so many theories if the present one is to be stated, developed and its implications explored. Similarly, the data or phenomena of emotion are too familiar to require detailed presentation here and instead sources of relevant descriptions will be cited. In citing both theoretical and data sources I have tried to use the earliest references since I believe they should be given priority over more recent sources that are essentially saying the same thing but in different terminology or in more elaborate detail. Current sources are given where they are fundamentally or significantly \"new.\"",

            "title": "Teaching and Research in Animal Behaviour in South African Universities: A Survey",
            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "A qualitative questionaire-based survey of psychology and biology/zoology departments at all 21 universities found in the Republic of South Africa was carried out in 1990 in order to determine how many of them taught and/or conducted research in the subdiscipline of animal behaviour, i.e., either as ethology or comparative psychology or both,and their future plans. Altogether only 10 psychology and 12 biology/zoology departments responded to the questionaire. In addition, a further five psychology departments were contacted via phone or through personal communication. The survey revealed a somewhat disappointing picture with regard to psychology departments—only three of them taught courses in animal behaviour regularly, five taught only small modules on animal behaviour whereas the rest of the departments neither did nor ever planned to do so in the near future. Most psychology departments were of the opinion that the study of animal behaviour was not important at all and consequently only a few of them had conducted or were still conducting some research in the area. In contrast, the picture was a much more exciting one with regard to biology/zoology departments—all of those which had responded, except for one only, had taught courses on animal behaviour in their curricula and had done so for at least a decade. The biology/zoology departments concerned considered animal behaviour to be a relatively important subdiscipline and the majority of them had also conducted or were still conducting some research in the area. Possible explanations for this discrepancy as well as implications thereof for the future of the study of the subdiscipline in South African universities are discussed.",

            "abstract": "The desert-grassland whiptail (Cnemidophorus uniparens) is an  all-female lizard species that reproduces clonally by parthenogenesis. Here we report marked geographic variation in the aggressive behavior of paired individuals in which pairs consisted either of individuals from within study sites or individuals representing each of two different study sites. Although we document allozyme variation within each study site, this did not differ significantly between sites. Previously reported restriction endonuclease analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates that the two lizard populations used in the present study arose from the same or closely related maternal ancestors by interspecific hybridization. Gross climatological differences do not appear to explain the behavioral variation between sites. The possible roles of polygenic effects not detected by the biochemical analyses and laboratory ies of environmental effects on the development of aggressive behavior await further investigation.",

            "abstract": "Rats were trained under go-no go conditions to discriminate among complex acoustic stimuli (short musical sequences). In order to investigate the role of different stimulus attributes in discriminative performance, two short musical excerpts differing in their melodic pattern, but maintaining the number, pitch, and duration of notes constant were provided in two different timbres, to obtain four different complex auditory stimuli. According to the experimental condition, the discriminative stimuli were, therefore, different in structure, in timbre or in both aspects. The animals were able to discriminate efficiently among the musical sequences only when cues furnished by timbre were available, whereas melodic differences made no difference. In the experimental setting used, the rat's discrimination of complex auditory stimuli appears, therefore, to be based neither on the melody nor on a compound of melody and timbre,but simply on the properties of the timbre of the stimuli.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Black rats (\nRattus rattus\n) have begun occupying a new habitat in recent years —the Jerusalem pine (Pinus halepensis) forests in Israel. In this, otherwise almost sterile habitat, the sole source of nourishment for the rats is the pine seems that can only be extracted from the cones through a complex feeding technique. Adult black rats unfamiliar with the technique (termed \"naive\") were unable to attain it either through trial and error or through observational learning when housed with experienced rats (termed \"strippers\"). In contrast, black rat pups raised by stripper mothers did learn the pine cone opening behaviour. In addition to the presence of a stripper model, however, the clues of the pine seeds themselves, as well as partially open cones, may also play a role in the acquisition of the technique. The state of the cone itself, when encountered by the rat pups, may be an important factor. Three groups of experimental animals were used: 25 pups born to naive mothers and reared on rat chow without exposure to either stripping mothers or partially opened cones; 25 pups born to naive mothers and exposed to pine cones in various stages of opening; 55 pups born to stripper mothers and exposed both to pine cones and to the presence of their mothers actively involved in stripping the cones and feeding on the seeds. We found that pine cone stripping behaviour is learned through two stages of a local enhancement effect: First, the pups are directed to the pine cones as a food resource, and then to the cone's proximal end as a starting point. The development of the stripping technique is acquired individually, with accumulating experience.",

Adapted from Hamilton's model, the model is based on selection through affinity, a process of genetic assortment. This would involve selective association of founding wasps on the basis of common possession of a behavioural trait. The model, therefore, invokes a form of behavioural screening in a genetically heterogeneous population. The validity of the hypothesis and the nature of the trait concerned are considered in relation to observations on formation of \nPolistine polygynous \nassociations and between species comparisons.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "The role of prenatal auditory stimulations in the development of the postnatal approach response in young nidifugous birds is well known. However most of the studies in this area treat these stimulations as passive events. The purpose of this experimental series is to establish a link between prenatal stimulations and concomitant modifications of embryonic environment (warming and egg turning). Chicks were thus tested in a situation in which they could choose between two pure tones, one of which was or was not prenatally associated with these two stimuli. All chicks of the four groups used here were artificially incubated at the laboratory. After hatching, one-day-old subjects were placed three times a day for 3 days in a situation of choice between two pure tones (HFT = 1000 Hz or LFT = 500 Hz, of 200 ms duration played back every 3 seconds). The operant response (crossing over one of the two active zones  allows the subject to hear either HFT or LFT. Number and duration of passings over each active zone were recorded. Results of the first control experiment showed that from the first test day naive chicks displayed a spontaneous preference for the low frequency pure tone. Another group of chicks was prenatally stimulated with HFT. This did not significantly affect the initial preference. In a third group, prenatal stimulations were repeatedly associated with modifications of the embryo's environment, i.e., warming and egg rotation. Results showed that the expression of the spontaneous preference for LFT was significantly delayed.  The fourth group confirmed the specificity of this effect. The contribution of such nonobvious prenatal learning to the development of the approach response is discussed.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Maternal responsiveness in adult hens was measured by studying their rates of vocalization over a period of 12 days. Four roups of hens were compared: one group was isolated both visually and tactually from chicks; two other groups were exposed either to visual cues or to tactile cues originating from chicks, and in the last group, hens received both types of cues. Visual or tactile cues alone induced similar levels of maternal responsiveness but simultaneous presentation of both types of cues induced maximum responsiveness.",

            "abstract": "This paper reports on the use, in 2011, of some recent data visualizations to both motivate students and assist them to understanding underlying official statistics concepts. Examples of visualisations used in a Masters course in public policy and an applied statistics honours course are presented. These visualizations are free, either on-line or open-source and easy to access. Although they are of aggregates of very large official data sets and so may mask some of the underlying variation they provide students with fun tools to explore the patterns and relationships between variables in the data set, discuss its implications and sometimes lead to new questions and analyses. Geo-visualisations help demonstrate the inter-disciplinary nature of official statistics in the real world. Initial feedback from students in these courses was enthusiastic. The on-going challenge for the teacher is to keep up-to-date in a world of rapidly evolving technology and to see the learning opportunities that it may provide. This paper suggests data visualisation is a valuable teaching resource now and, in the longer term, may have implications not only on how we teach but also on what we teach in statistics.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Fighting in a boxing style is the most spectacular behaviour of red kangaroos,  \nMacropus rufus\n, yet its structure and function have not been analysed in detail. Patterns of sparring, kicking and wrestling occur between mothers and young (especially males), in formalized contests between males, and in escalated conflicts over resources (shelter, water, oestrous females). Observations were made of fighting behaviour in free-living and captive individuals. The frequency of fighting between various age/sex classes in the field was determined and the structure of fighting over a water resource was analysed from a 12 h videotape record. These results were compared with an analysis of 85 videotaped plus 35 other fights observed in a captive group of eight males (age 1 - 7 year). These fights were formalized contests  which did not involve or resolve any immediate conflict over a resource. Such fights share many of the properties ascribed to play-fighting. They are initiated with invitational behaviour that does not include characteristic threat behaviour seen in fights over a resource. They involve self-handicapping, some lack of dominance distinctions, and usually several bouts occur interrupted by mutual pauses. The structure of the fight suggests that the main goal is to push or wrestle the opponent off balance and down to the ground rather than inflict potentially injurious kicks as seen in resource conflicts. Furthermore larger opponents often adopt an inferior flat-footed stance and dominants and/or winners kick significantly less than losers. The  context, goals and structure of these non-resource based fights suggest that they are a form of play-fighting. Selection of play partners on the basis of size/dominance or kinship indicate that such play-fighting in red kangaroos is neither truly cooperative nor disruptive and selfish. The behaviour most likely functions as a form of non-damaging assessment of opponents with benefits in skill development in younger individuals.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Investigations of dominance behavior and its relationship to  calcium gland size were conducted in the asexual gecko, Lepidodactylus lugubris. In an initial study, geckos,immediately after laying eggs, were randomly assigned to one of six groups where time of social contact (2 vs. 7 days) and type of social contact (direct experience with a gravid or non-gravid gecko or indirect experience) were varied in a 2 X 3 factorial design. Behaviors displayed by geckos in social contact were system atically recorded. Dominance hierarchies were readily formed between gecko  dyads that received 7 days of social contact with each other. Dominance was not related to gecko size or reproductive state. A second study examined the relationship between dominance, calcium gland size and egg development. Geckos were housed in groups of 4 for 28 days and were subsequently transferred into either dyads or housed individually for an additional 28 days. During the final 28 days, half of the geckos received extra calcium. Dominance, size of calcium glands and egg development were recorded. Dominant geckos developed a greater number of eggs and had larger initial  calcium glands than subordinates, but extra calcium was not related o gland size. The function of dominance in L. lugubris populations may be two-fold: it may act as a spacing mechanism in low density environments and may facilitate the development and laying of eggs by more nutritionally fit individuals in high density environments.",

Infants and rats display similar behavior patterns in FI and childhood on, humans develop species-specific behavior patterns in FI, which differ from those of animal species. However, DRL patterns do follow similar trends in animals and humans. These discrepancies and similarities may by the availability of cognitive and linguistic tools in humans, and the degree od schedule constraint on behavior. Motivation and reinforcer variables as well as to a cross-specific timing mechanism (such as scalar timing) are briefly commented upon. Available data tend to show that humans shift from contingency-shaped or \"animal-like\" behavior, in infancy, to rule-governed behavior. This transition is progressive and does not seem to erase forms of adaptation to temporal constraints that humans share with other species.",

            "abstract": "Human infants' perception of tone sequences or melodies is reviewed in the context of related work with human adults and nonhuman species. For the most part, infants use an adult-like pitch processing strategy that is global and relational rather than the local pitch strategy that is characteristic of the nonhuman species studied to date. Thus they encode and retain the pitch configuration or contour of a melody, with little attention to the absolute pitches of individual notes. In the case of well structured melodies, specifically, melodies that are prototypical of Western music, infants encode more precise relations, notably the intervals or exact pitch relations between adjacent notes. Finally, the functional significance of relational pitch processing in human infancy is considered.",

            "title": "The Perception of Complex Acoustic Patterns in Noise by Blue Monkey (\nCercopithecus mitts\n) and Human Listeners",
            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Blue monkeys (\nCercopithecus mitis\n) were trained to detect complex acoustic signals embedded in noise. Masked thresholds were determined for four human consonant-vowel speech sounds (\nba, pa, ga,\n and\n ka\n), and four blue monkey calls (\nboom, pyow, chirp,\n and \ntrill\n). The ability of monkey listeners to hear these signals in noise was compared with humans. Results showed that monkey and human hearing was very similar. The mean difference between species for these eight stimuli in the broad-band noise environment was 2.3 dB. The signal-to-noise ratio for perception ranged from 4.8 dB for the ka to -23.8 dB for the boom. The four monkey calls were audible at a signal-to-noise level that was 8.1 dB less than that required for the detection of the speech sounds. However, most of this effect was due to the audibility of the boom. With the boom excluded, the mean signal-to-noise ratio for detection of the remaining 7 sounds was -0.5 dB, and the mean difference in the audibility of the speech and monkey sounds within this set was 2.6 dB. These results contrast with previous findings which used simulated rain forest noise as the masking noise (Brown, 1986). In rain forest noise, test signals were audible at signal-to-noise ratios approximately 10 dB less than those reported here, and the observed difference in the relative audibility of human and monkey utterances was larger. These findings suggest that rather small variations in the amplitude and spectrum of the ambient noise may have a strong influence on the audibility of vocal signals in nature.",

These methodologies are described herein, and the kinds of questions that can be addressed with each technique, and its strengths and limitations,are addressed. De ction and discrimination studies are described that measure animal abilities, followed by classification and judgment studies that measure animal proclivities.  The choice of methodology is a consideration in experimental design, because the format of the question can direct, and sometimes define the answer. The experiments discussed emphasize that animals have multiple processing modes available to them that they use to classify stimuli. Detection and discrimination experiments may tap into one of those modes, while categorization and judgment experiments may address a different mode. A feature of these experiments is that they reduce the extent to which we view animal perception and cognition as distinct from human perception and cognition. "abstract": "Budgerigars were trained with operant conditioning procedures to discriminate among sets of calls from several species in a Same-Different task. Response latencies from this task were analyzed in several ways including multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis. The pattern of response latencies from budgerigars reared in a large group of conspecifics was compared to that of budgerigars reared in acoustic and social isolation. Results show that budgerigars with previous experience with species-specific vocalizations and isolate-reared birds who had never heard such sounds can both discriminate among the categories of species-specific vocal signals. But, results from MDS and cluster analysis also show that rearing budgerigars in isolation has subtle effects on the perception of these categories of vocal signals.",

            "abstract": "In the superior temporal sulcus (STS) of the macaque brain there are populations of cells which respond selectively to faces. Studies of these cells reveal that they are very sensitive to the direction of eye gaze and posture of the head of other subjects. It is argued that one function of the cells is to enable analysis of where other individuals are directing their attention. Given this selectivity for complex socially relevant stimuli it is surprising that the STS contains cells that respond to touch anywhere on the body or to any movement seen in the visual environment. We have investigated these tactile and motion sensitive cells to determine their behavioural significance. In the awake, behaving monkey we found that the critical dimension for polymodal coding is whether or not the sensations are expected. Tactile stimulation out of sight cannot be predicted and elicits neuronal responses. By contrast, when the monkey can see and, therefore, predict impending contact, or when the monkey touches a familiar surface in a predictable location, cell responses are reduced or abolished. In an analogous way some cells are unresponsive to the sight of the monkey's own limbs moving but respond to the sight of other moving stimuli. Since unpredictable sensations are often caused by other animals, the STS area appears well suited to defining sensory stimuli that are important in social or predator/prey interactions.",

            "abstract": "Perception of song syllables taken from natural song sparrow and swamp sparrow songs was examined in five different species: song sparrows (Melospiza melodia), swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana), zebra finches {Taeniopygia guttata catanotis), canaries iSerinus canaria), and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Using operant conditioning techniques, we trained these birds to discriminate among sparrow song syllables. By testing the birds on all possible pair-wise combinations of syllables, we generated \"similarity\" matrices for these song syllables from the birds'response latencies to detect changes in a repeating background of syllables. A number of different statistical techniques were used to examine species differences in perception including factor analysis of an inter-species correlation matrix, cluster analysis ofthe similarity matrices, and individual-differences multidimensional scaling (MDS) of the similarity matrices from each species. The spatial map of these stimuli produced by MDS revealed the perceived relations among these syllables for each species. Several acoustic measurements taken from these syllables were correlated with stimulus coordinates of the syllables in multidimensional space. These results demonstrate that natural vocal signals can be effectively used as stimuli in psychoacoustic experiments and the outcome of such experiments are likely to reveal robust species differences in perception.",

            "abstract": "Pigmented dark agouti and albino Wistar rats were compared for the effect of differentially reinforced pre-exposure to peppermint as a positive and vanilla as a negative odour cue. Both types of rat showed significantly enhanced performance on the simultaneous odour discrimination task with the same cues, when compared to control groups not pre-exposed to the odour cues. However, the pigmented rats had steeper learning curves than the albinos, with the albino controls performing significantly worse than the other groups. The results are discussed in terms of task components of cue significance and response regulation. It appeared that the response component was more difficult for the albino rats compared to the pigmented rats.",
