            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Chronically elevated levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) are implicated in human stress-related and affective disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and major depression. To gain more insight into the relationship between hyperactivity of the CRH system and associated neuroendocrine, autonomic, physiological, and behavioral changes, we have developed a transgenic mouse model of CRH overproduction (CRHOE). In this study, we explored the behavioral consequences of chronic CRH overproduction in mice of the two available transgenic lines (CRH-OE2122 and CRH-OE2123) in paradigms measuring behavioral aspects of stress, anxiety, and depression. These paradigms include tasks based on free exploration of novel environments (unfamiliar homecage and unfamiliar open field), stress-induced hyperthermia, tests associated with anxiety- related behavior (elevated plus maze and light-dark box), and paradigms in which (anti-)depressant-like behaviors can be detected (tail suspension test and forced swim test). The only relatively consistent finding, although not always significant, was reduced locomotor activity in CRH-OE2122 mice, corresponding well with the known effects of CRH on locomotion. Contrary to our predictions, CRH-OE mice did not show an altered response to stress, and a phenotype indicative of increased anxiety and/or depression was not evident in CRH-OE mice.",

            "abstract": "The experiment examined interval timing in rats during a momentary, unsignaled, increase in the time to reinforcement. A session began with intervals programmed according to a fixed interval (FI) 60 s reinforcement schedule, changed to either an FI 90 s, FI 120 s, or FI 180 s schedule at an unpredictable point, and then returned to an FI 60 s schedule after 1, 8, or 24 successive long intervals had elapsed. Overall, postreinforcement wait time duration increased with increases in the scheduled time to reinforcement. The amount by which wait time increased did not depend on the duration of longer intervals, but did depend on the number of longer intervals intercalated into a session. The results indicate that rats are sensitive to moment-by-moment changes in the time to reinforcement and support other studies showing an asymmetry between timing upward and downward shifts in the criterion for reinforcement of an FI schedule.",

            "abstract": "Mice carrying a threonine286 to alanine mutation in subunit α of Ca2+/CaM-dependent protein kinase II (α-CaMKIIT286A) have been reported to show deficits in hippocampal long-term potentiation as well as spatial learning deficits similar to those induced in mice with hippocampal lesions. In this series, we sought to extend this analysis by investigating the performance of α-CaMKII mutants on other, potentially hippocampal, learning tasks. Experiment 1 examined fear conditioning, Experiment 2 examined the acquisition of free-operant instrumental conditioning and its dependence upon the action-outcome association, and Experiment 3 assessed interval timing using an instrument version of the peak procedure.We found evidence of a deficit in contextual fear conditioning in Experiment 1 and in peak timing in Experiment 3, but neither a deficit in fear conditioning to a discrete tone CS nor in the acquisition of instrumental conditioning in Experiment 2. Furthermore, all of the mice in Experiment 2 showed a normal instrumental outcome devaluation effect, suggesting that encoding of the action-outcome association was unaffected by this point mutation. It appears, therefore, that although learning in CaMKII mutants is affected on specific tasks, they do not have a general learning deficit, and that the influence of this mutation, and therefore, of α-CaMKII, is both localized anatomically and relatively specialized functionally.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "The Morris water maze (MWM) has been widely used as a diagnostic tool to detect alterations in hippocampal-dependent learning induced by pharmacological or genetic manipulations in rats and mice. However, with the frequent use of the paradigm some questions have arisen regarding the complex nature of the effects of environmental and biological factors that influence behavioral performance of rodents in this task. One of the most contentious issues is whether MWM can consistently detect genetic differences independent of environmental, i.e., laboratory and experimental conditions. In the present paper, we demonstrate that changes in environmental factors, due to holding mice in large vs. small home cages, can lead to significant and robust spatial learning alterations in one inbred strain (C57BL/6) while having minimal or no effects on another (129/SVEV). The detected genotype-environment interaction underscores the need for experimenters to diligently control and document all possible environmental factors in order to make their results comparable across multiple test environments and laboratories.",

            "abstract": "To help ESL writing teachers and curriculum designers focus instruction on appropriate exemplification in academic prose, this paper examines the frequency of overt example markers and particular types of examples provided in native speaker (NS) and nonnative speaker (NNS) academic essays. To this end, the analysis compares frequency rates of example markers, first and third person pronouns, and the occurrences of past tense verbs in over 1,000 university placement essays of NS and advanced and matriculated NNS students. The results of the study demonstrate that NNS texts employ these features at significantly higher rates than NS texts. The findings further show that NNS students rely primarily on recounts of past personal experiences, incorporated as examples with the purpose of supporting the essay thesis. The preponderance of personal examples in NNS texts shows that many NNSs transfer from LI to L2 rhetorical paradigms of constructing evidence informal written text. However, an additional issue arises in light of the fact that current methodologies for the teaching of writing and composition encourage personal narratives as a means of providing evidence and proof for a thesis, even though personal examples are rarely considered to be appropriate in academic discourse in disciplines outside the teaching of writing. Due to the similarity of approaches to providing evidence and proof in non-Anglo-American rhetorical traditions and current methods for teaching writing, it appears that writing pedagogy may actually compound the effects of LI to L2 transfer of rhetorical paradigms identified in NNS texts.",

Moreover, as genetic variants that contribute to the development of mental disorders are found, mice bearing these genes represent novel and powerful animal models of the disorders. However, these mutations are complicated by the fact that they generally occur at early stages of development and in many and perhaps most tissues of the body. This complicates the use of these mice for studies of gene function in adult organisms. The last five years has seen the development of second generation mutations in mice, in which the mutation (either loss or addition of a gene) can be controlled temporally and spatially, that is, the mutation can be induced in adult animals and targeted to a particular brain region and neuronal cell type. Although not yet routine, such inducible and cell-type specific mutations represent powerful new tools to understand the role of a particular gene in complex behavior.",

            "abstract": "Mice can be shown to process temporal information as if they use an internal stopwatch that can be run, stopped, and reset on command and whose speed of “ticking” is adjustable. In addition, interval-timing behavior can be separated into clock, memory, and decision stages of information processing such that one stage can be modified without changing the others. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of interval-timing procedures in the evaluation of behavioral phenotypes, proline transporter (PROT) deficient mice (+/+, +/-, and -/-) were assessed for motor control (Rotarod beam), spatial memory (Morris water-maze), and temporal generalization (peak-interval procedure) competency. The findings demonstrate that interval-timing procedures can be profitably integrated into a behavioral battery and used to selectively diagnose the psychological abnormalities associated with transgenic, knock-out, and knock-down mouse models of human diseases.",

            "abstract": "This article describes the integration of neurobiological and molecular genetic approaches in the study of the function of the neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). CRF is a particularly relevant subject for targeted genetic mutation because of its hypothesized critical role in hormonal and behavioral responses to stressors, its potential role in psychopathology, and the limited neuropharmacological agents available to increase or decrease function in this system. We review the strategy of targeted genetic mutation in neuropharmacology using research directed at understanding the function of CRF and related neuropeptides through molecular genetic manipulation of the levels of the endogenous agonist, its different receptors, and the binding protein. Genetically engineered approaches to functional analysis cross-validate experiments to promote the neurobiological elucidation of complex systems and provide critical information about constituent differences that contribute to individual differences in brain function.",

            "abstract": "Dopamine terminals in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex modulate cognitive processes such as spatial learning and working memory. Because dopamine D4 receptors are expressed in these brain areas we have analyzed mutant mice lacking this receptor subtype (D\nrd4\n-/-). Wild-type and D\nrd4\n-/- mice were challenged in two spatial learning paradigms: the Morris water maze and an alternation T-maze. D\nrd4\n-/- mice showed normal place learning ability to find a hidden platform based on spatial extra-maze cues. In addition, \nDrd4\n-/- mice were able to find a new platform location with the same learning plasticity as wild type-mice. Spatial working memory assessed on a T maze showed that \nDrd4\n-/- mice were more efficient than wild-type mice in acquiring the maximum plateau of correct alternation scores. These results provide further evidence that the functional consequence of lacking D4 receptors is more evident in behaviors dependent on the integrity of the prefrontal cortex.",

            "abstract": "Behavioral and pharmacological testing in mice has been revamped following the development of new tools for the manipulation of genetic information. We present the results from the peak procedure, an operant test that assesses the capacity to perceive, remember, and act upon temporal information. We studied the basic timing abilities in two different strains of mice, the C57Bl/6J and C3H/HeJ, and their response to psychoactive substances. Scopolamine and high doses of d-amphetamine disrupted performance by increasing response variability. The effect of d-amphetamine was particularly clear in C3H mice. Whereas scopolamine did not seem to affect the location of the response, the effect of a low dose of d-amphetamine, a leftward shift, was consistent with the hypothesis that it accelerates the internal time keeping mechanism. Physostigmine alone improved performance by reducing variability between trials without affecting the response location. Pretreatment with physostigmine partially blocked the deleterious effects of scopolamine. Methylphenidate did not have major effects on timing behavior in C57 but in the highest dose shifted the response of C3H mice to the left. The higher sensitivity of the C3H strain to the effects of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate support its value as an animal model of attention deficit disorder. The performance of mice in this temporal task was comparable to that observed in rats and pigeons, and seemed exquisitely sensitive to pharmacological manipulation.",

            "abstract": "The memory mechanism carries information forward in time. Screening for genetic distortions in this information (screening for changes in the content of memory) is likely to do a better job of distinguishing between genetic effects on memory mechanisms and genetic effects on performance mechanisms than screening for changes in the strength of learned behavior. The peak procedure is the most commonly used screen for duration memory. Mice give peak data strikingly similar to data from the rat and the pigeon. The data, however, favor a model in which the decision criterion for starting the response (putting the head into the hole) and stopping the response are independently determined. For reasons we explain, this prevents the estimation of scalar memory error and memory variability from simple peak data.",

The first of these research programs concerns the description and analysis of social learning processes influencing food choices of Norway rats (\nRattus norvegicus\n). The second involves social interactions affecting mate choices of Japanese quail (\nCoturnix japonica\n). Study of these model systems has shown that at least two biologically important behaviors, food choice and mate choice, can be shaped by social interactions and that the social interactions that bias behavioral development are open to reductionist analysis in terms of the behavior of interacting individuals.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "The effects of stimulus preexposure on conditioning and generalization of a taste aversion were evaluated in infant rats, manipulating stimulus similarity and duration, and the length and procedure (intermixed vs. blocked) of preexposure. Preexposure to simple tastes retarded conditioning and reduced generalization (Experiment 1a), whereas preexposure to compound tastes facilitated conditioning and increased generalization (Experiment 1b). Increasing the number of preexposure trials retarded conditioning and decreased generalization with compound tastes (Experiment 1c). These experiments failed to find a differential effect of intermixed vs. blocked stimulus preexposure. In Experiment 2, a 15 min exposure to the conditioned stimulus during conditioning resulted in a weak aversion, whereas a 60-min exposure resulted in a strong aversion. In Experiment 3, the strength of the aversion and the duration of the conditioned stimulus were directly related in nonpreexposed pups, but inversely related in preexposed pups. In infant rats, the level of generalization between stimuli is determined by how preexposure affects acquisition rate.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Our laboratory has discovered that alterations in choline availability to the developing rat fetus lead to long-term changes in spatial and temporal memory function across the lifespan and associated changes in the septo-hippocamal system. The current study was undertaken to determine if performance on an attention task, believed to be relatively independent of septo-hippocampal function, was modified by changes in choline availability prior to birth. A sustained attention task was developed for mice that includes all the features of the 2-choice signal-detection procedure initially applied to rats (McGaughy & Sarter, 1995). Prenatal choline deficiency significantly impaired the ability of adult mice to sustain attention to a brief visual cue throughout a session as evidenced by decreased “Hits” and increased “Omissions” during the second-half of trials. In contrast, prenatal choline supplementation enhanced the ability of mice to detect visual cues but did not alter their ability to maintain attention throughout a session. These data support the view that the effects of alterations in choline availability on brain anatomy, physiology, and function likely extend beyond the septo-hippocampal system that modulates spatial memory. In the case of the sustained attention task, this likely includes cholinergic projections from the basal forebrain to neocortex.",

            "abstract": "One of the differences between full and reduced language varieties is the repertoire oftheir use (Dorian, 1981, 1994). In this paper I argue that the written discourse of American Lithuanian (AL), a language variety spoken in the United States, is different from and to some extent impoverished compared to the written discourse of Full Lithuanian (FL), a language variety used by its native speech community in the Republic of Lithuania. I suggest that this is a result of the primarily oral function of American Lithuanian in its speech community. The data used for the study consist of a 40,000-word corpus of written local news and oral interviews in FL and AL. The paper focuses on the structural composition of written and oral texts in American Lithuanian and Full Lithuanian and analyzes (a) information structure in terms of word order variation as part of cohesion and (b) referent accessibility and the grammatical form of the referent NP as part of coherence.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "The arrival of Evolutionary Psychology (EP) has upset many psychologists. Partly, this reflects resistance to what is perceived as genetic reductionism, partly worry about yet another step closer to the life sciences. Are the life sciences going to devour the social sciences? This essay starts out with a list of pitfalls for the beginning Darwinists that many EP followers are, warning against simplistic adptationist scenarios, and the fragmentation of the organism, the human brain (a module for every capacity), and the genome (a gene for this and a gene for that). Despite these criticisms, the author is generally sympathetic to the evolutionary approach, however, and feels that EP is inevitable. It may show growing pains, but psychology does need to move under the evolutionary umbrella, which is the only framework that can provide coherence to a fragmented discipline. The essay concludes with several illustrations of the usefulness of evolutionary theory to explain the social behavior of primates. Primatologists face many of the same dilemmas as followers of EP in that primate behavior seems almost endlessly variable. Examples of political strategy, peacemaking, and reciprocal exchange show the complexity, the profound similarity to human behavior, and the promise of the evolutionary framework.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "The hypothesis that the standard acoustic startle response (ASR) paradigm contains the elements of interval timing was tested. Acoustic startle stimuli were presented at a 10-s interstimulus interval (ISI) for 100 trials leading to habituation of the ASR. The ISI was then changed to either a shorter (5-s) or a longer (15-s) duration using a betweensubjects design. Dishabituation of the ASR was used to measure the degree of temporal generalization for the interval-timing process. The ASR showed dishabituation at both shorter and longer ISI values on the first trial following the change in ISI. The dishabituation resulting from the change in ISI was temporary and the ASR rapidly returned to levels of response habituation showing rate sensitivity to the frequency of stimulus presentation. Interval timing may be a standard feature of this habituation paradigm, it serves to anticipate the time of occurrence of the subsequent stimulus and to prepare the startle response, and provides a computational dimension lacking in the habituation process per se.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "Two experiments examined the role of spatial dimensions in pattern discrimination and judgment of similarity by pigeons. In Experiment 1, pigeons were given a symbolic matching-to-sample task in which they first learned to discriminate between two patterns (A and B) that differed in the spatial layout of an arrow inside a circle divided into four quadrants. The first training stimulus contained an arrow inside the Top Left quadrant and the tip of the arrow was pointing toward 90 degrees. The second training stimulus contained an arrow inside the Bottom Left quadrant and the arrow was pointed downwards at 180 degrees. Fourteen new patterns, consisting of all the remaining combinations of arrow orientations and arrow locations (quadrants), were then presented and their categorization by the pigeons was examined. The results showed that the two dimensions pertaining to the position of the arrow (Top/Bottom and Left/Right halves of the circle) and their interactions were more salient than the two dimensions pertaining to its orientation (Horizontal / Vertical arrows and two arrow ends). Experiment 2 showed that the position of a pattern component was encoded and used in similarity judgments even when the A and B differed along nonspatial dimensions (a rectangle vs a circle). When pigeons encountered new visual patterns and judged their similarity to old ones, they privileged the position of the pattern components over shape in their judgments.",

There is a rich and var ied literature on technics and civilization, to borrow from Mumford's brilliant account ( 193 4). Whether looking at machines, autos, comput ers or the Internet, this literature provides a rich treasure-trove of social and historical analysis. This issue of the Berkeley Planningjournal makes a contribution to this topic by examining the effects of technology on planning and urban and regional development. The editors of the Berkeley Planningjournal have selected four articles on this topic. Each provides a distinctly different perspective on technology's impacts on plan ning and urban development.",

            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "As Jacoby and McNamara (1999) have convincingly demonstrated, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) assessment tools with primarily a linguisticfocus can fail to locate the competence actually needed in real-world professional settings. In a similar vein, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogical activities rooted in an unsituated notion of academic English can also be inadequate or misleading. Through a sequential analysis of actual interactions, this study describes the real-world discourse activities performed by competent native and normative speakers to handle complex academic tasks. Using data from a graduate seminar, I detail two interactional resources ( \"peer referencing \" and \"asserting vulnerability\") exercised by the seminar participants in the doing of disagreement and critique. I show that these resources are invoked to accomplish the double-duty of acknowledging another's viewpoint while performing a potentially disagreeing action, to make an otherwise independently advanced critique into a co-constructed one, or to back down from forcefully articulated positions. Finally, I hypothesize that the particular use of peer referencing and asserting vulnerability characterizes the members' transitional stage between undergraduate novicehood and doctoral level junior expertise.",

            "abstract": "This study investigates the nature of cohesion, coherence, content, and grammar emergent in children 's essays, with a greater emphasis given to the understanding of cohesion and coherence. Conceptual definitions of these constructs are summarized based on prior research. The measurement of these constructs is operationalized into a picture-based narrative writing task for elicitation and scoring criteria for quantification. 192 first and second graders from an immersion program and English-only classes participated in the study. The analysis uses percentages, correlations, multiple regression, and qualitative analyses. Main findings include the following: (a) the measurement of cohesion and coherence can be operationalized; (b) referential and lexical cohesion correlate highly with the overall writing quality defined as the sum of the ratings of coherence, content, and grammar; (c) ellipses and substitution show a weak correlation with the overall writing quality; (d) lexical and referential cohesion are significant predictors of coherence while other types of cohesion are not; (e) dominant reference types are pronominal forms and proper nouns, and prominent types of conjunctive relation are temporal and additive; and (f) the most common error in cohesion is inaccurate reference. The substance and method of this study can provide a foundation for investigating subsequent topics with latent variables and different linguistic backgrounds and grade levels.",

            "abstract": "This study examines the production of wh-questions in the speech off our monolingual child speakers of Catalan who were recorded longitudinally as part of the study carried out by Serra & Sole, obtained from the CHILDES Data Base (MacWhinney & Snow, 1985). In this data all wh-questions produced appeared to be adult-like, in contrast with the non-adult-like production of this construction in child English, Swedish, Dutch and German. However, there is an initial period in which no wh-questions at all are produced, in spite of the fact that other aspects of syntax, such as negation, clitic-placement and complementation seem adult-like in this same period. During this \"no wh-question\" period, there is a concomitant absence of verbal tense morphology, with the exceptions of present and irrealis forms (imperatives, root infinitives, root gerunds and root participles). Interestingly, the onset of wh-questions appears to correlate with the onset of a much wider variety of tense morphology. Given this observation and Rizzi's (1991) hypothesis that wh-questions and tense morphology are crucially linked in adult syntax, I propose that the early absence of wh-questions is a consequence of the early underspecification of tense.",

In this article, the authors discuss these benefits, beginning with a history of their collaborative relationship that began in graduate school and has continued for several years. They discuss both their individual differences and similarities that have contributed to their relationship and enhanced their understanding of their students, their ability to teach more effectively, and their professional lives. Lastly, the authors conclude with recommendations for how others can establish and maintain a lasting collaborative relationship.",

In describing these stages, he seeks to empower other nonnative English speaking (NNES) professionals in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The article describes the author’s experiences, which range from learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in China to teaching English as a Second language (ESL) in the U.S., from writing and publishing in his native language, Chinese, to writing and publishing in English, and from being a graduate student in a university in the United States to serving as a doctoral dissertation committee chair. The article further reveals the hurdles overcome, the challenges encountered, and the academic success in teaching and research that the author has experienced as a NNES professional. The author concludes by sharing his belief that the success of a TESOL professional does not depend on whether one is a native speaker or a non-native speaker of English.",

            "abstract": "This study analyzes the diary entries of four nonnative English-speaking (NNES) students enrolled in a master of art’s (MA) program in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) in Southern California. A qualitative analysis of the diary entries shows that, in spite of the differences in the participants’ background in English language learning, length of U.S. residence, and professional goals, there are four common themes in the diaries: (a) feeling language anxiety, (b) coping with feelings of inferiority, (c) coping with their language needs, and (d) bringing strength to the TESOL program. The study shows that the students experienced language anxiety but were able to use coping mechanisms to overcome difficulties. At the same time, this study highlights the strengths that these NNES students brought to the MA TESOL program in which they were enrolled.",

            "abstract": "This study investigates the learning styles of college and university Russian-speaking students of English as a second language (ESL) through an analysis of their responses to Reid’s (1984) Perceptual Learning Styles Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ), of their responses to a background questionnaire, and of data from oral interviews. The research questions are: 1. What learning styles emerged from Reid’s PLSPQ? 2. How well did the PLSPQ findings correspond to the oral interview results? 3. Did the learning style preferences reflect more the students’ individual preferences or their cultural traditions? Findings from the data indicate that the preferred learning style of these Russianspeaking students is kinesthetic, closely followed by auditory. In addition, the results of the data suggest that the learning style preferences of these subjects reflect more their individual learning style preferences than the influence of cultural traditions. Discrepancies, however, arose in the findings among the three elicitation instruments. The article also provides insights into the area of research design and methodology and questions the validity of the PLSPQ.",

            "abstract": "This article discusses issues that influence the job search of nonnative English speaking (NNES) teachers in the U.S. Recent publications (Medgyes, 1994; Tang, 1997; Thomas, 1999) have shown that NNES teachers encounter discriminatory practices in employment because neither employers nor applicants grasp all the issues involved. Using the resolution from the organization Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on NNES teachers and hiring practices (“A TESOL Statement,” 1992) as a basis, this article will present a set of guidelines for administrators and NNES applicants to improve employment opportunities. The authors, themselves community college administrators, discuss factors that account for the attitudes of administrators, English as a second language (ESL) learners, and NNES job applicants.",

            "abstract": "In this article, the author argues that the “native speaker of English” concept is a linguistic manifestation of nativist discourses that construct visible minority immigrant women in First-World countries as being nonnative to the nation state and, thus, as being nonnative speakers of English. This study is based on the experiences of eight minority immigrant women who have taught English as a second language (ESL) to adults in Toronto, Canada. The article explores the teachers’ encounters with native speaker ideologies and recounts how they negotiated challenges in the classroom. Using data from the study, the author raises questions about the validity of the native speaker model that is used in ESL programs and suggests that the native-nonnative speaker dichotomy be dismantled, and the native-speaker norm be reconceptualized.",

            "abstract": "A survey of elementary school teachers in Southern California was conducted by mail to identify their perceptions of supports and resources that were necessary and available for the education of English language learners (ELs) within their classrooms. A total of 306 usable surveys was returned (61%). The findings indicated that while many resources were available, others such as materials, training, access to paraprofessionals, support for release time for meetings, parental support, and contact with bilingual educators were less available. Future professional development activities for teachers serving ELs can be successful if they take into account these perceived needs of teachers.",

            "title": "Teaching in Kindergarten Through Grade 12 Programs: Perceptions of Native and Nonnative English-Speaking Practitioners",
            "subtitle": null,
            "abstract": "This study compared the perceptions of two groups of kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) practitioners, native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and nonnative English-speaking teachers (NNESTs), in relation to their professional preparation, their level of job satisfaction, and their degree of comfort teaching various skill areas. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of a survey administered to 55 NESTs and 32 NNESTs in Southern California showed that a complex set of similarities and differences characterized the K-12 NESTs and NNESTs who participated in this investigation. The similarities identified included the positive views of the two groups about their professional preparation and the support received from formal networks (e.g., mentoring programs) and informal networks (e.g., colleagues, friends, and relatives). The two groups were also similar in their positive self-reported level of job satisfaction and their positive perceptions of their English language skills. One of the differences was the grades they taught, with a higher percentage of NNESTs teaching early elementary grades. Additionally, NNESTs were slightly more negative than NESTs in their evaluation of school administrators, exhibited more positive self-perceptions about their instructional abilities, and saw their nonnative status as contributing to their professional abilities. The results of this preliminary investigation suggest the need for further research on NNESTs and for the development of collaborative projects between master of art (MA) degree programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and K-12 programs designed to benefit future teachers, regardless of their language background.",
