A key figure in the field of language education, Dr. Campbell was always committed to and fascinated by the study of language. Throughout his career, he worked on pioneering language education and research projects both domestically and internationally. His interests ranged from the design and development of English language training programs for professionals overseas, to the preservation of heritage languages in the United States. An active member of the profession, Dr. Campbell held several positions of leadership. He served as President of TESOL in 1971-1972 and sponsored and directed the first TESOL Summer Institute in 1979—a program that is still running today. Besides his extraordinary career accomplishments and contributions to the field of applied linguistics, Dr. Campbell served the UCLA community with unwavering enthusiasm. ESL textbooks sometimes fail to reflect authentic grammar use, thus raising questions as to how nonstandard usages should be treated in the classroom. This paper describes native English speakers’ usage of \nwould have\n in past counterfactual \nif\n- and \nwish\n-clauses in spoken discourse and examines acceptability judgments of this usage in an informal written dialogue. In this study the \nwould have\n variant was widely used and accepted by the participants. The paper argues that ESL pedagogical materials should descriptively address the \nwould have\n usage, which is potentially unconscious even among ESL instructors. The paper further explores plausible hypotheses accounting for the prevalent and stable usage of \nwould have\n in violation of prescriptive rules. In the present qualitative study, undergraduate second language students perceived teachers’ moral agency through teachers’ use of religion as a pedagogical tool, teachers’ (re)actions in the classroom, and teachers’ judgments of students. As key participants in the research process, students identified the presence of morality in their own academic experiences, clearly articulating specific situations in which moral issues influenced second language classrooms; in addition, students analyzed effects of teachers’ moral agency on their own perspectives and actions as language students. Students have been shown to contribute more, and at a higher level of linguistic complexity, to CMC discussions than in face-to-face situations. Further, participation is more equitable among students, and less instructor-controlled, in this type of discourse than in a normal classroom setting. The asynchronous nature of the discussion forum allows users to read the postings without the pressure to respond immediately and provides a transcript of the conversation for conference or evaluation purposes. The article also discusses the author’s use of a CMC discussion forum in her high school English as a Second Language class. Student postings and reflections are included. Poison Control Center Calls Regarding Dental and Oral-Care Products", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "Background: A cluster of incidents in which non-toothpaste products were used to brush teeth prompted a review of all calls to one Poison Control Center (PCC) regarding exposures to dental and oral-care products to determine if any resulted in significant toxicity.\n\n\nMethods: Retrospective review of 65,849 calls to one PCC during one calendar year. All inquiries about exposures to substances used as dental or oral-care products were analyzed by a single reviewer for reported adverse effects, including hospital admission or PCC referral for emergent medical evaluation.\n\n\nResults: 798 calls involved exposure to dental or oral-care products, comprising 1.21% of all calls received. Toothbrushing incidents with non-toothpaste products (122 cases) did not result in any significant recognized toxicity. Twenty-four patients were either referred for emergent medical evaluation (14) or were admitted to the hospital (10). In 23 of these patients (96%), the toxic agent was either an over-the-counter analgesic or a local anesthetic used to treat dental pain.\n\n\nConclusions: Among PCC calls received regarding dental and of the FDA VVarning on the Use of Droperidol by U.S. Emergency Physicians", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "Objectives: To determine if emergency physicians' (EP) use droperidol has changed since the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning of December 2001 concerning QT interval prolongation, torsade de pointes, and sudden death; and to query EP opinions regarding droperidol before and after the FDA warning and regarding potential alternative drugs.\n\n\nMethods: An internet-based survey was designed with questions regarding droperidol use in the emergency department (ED). Data collected included EP demographics, use of droperidol before and after the FDA warning, use of alternative drugs, and incidence of arrhythmias. A representative sample of EPs were contacted by e-mail and asked to complete the survey.\n\n\nResults: A total of 2,000 e-mails resulted in 506 (25%) completed surveys. There was no second mailing. Responders' average years practicing was 12.6 +_ 9.2. EP responders worked in private/community (n=278, 55%), academic/county (n=187, 37%), and HMO (n=41,8%) hospitals. The majority (n=455, 90%) used droperidol and were aware of the FDA warning (n=460, 91%). Droperidol was no longer available at 122 (24%) of the respondents' EDs as a result of the FDA warning. Prior to the FDA warning, EPs who had used droperidol used it as an antiemetic (n=408, 90%), for control of agitation (n=330, 73%), for treatment of headache (n=247, 54%), and for treatment of vertigo (n=106, 23%). After the FDA warning, 387 (85%) of EPs reported their use of droperidol had decreased or ceased altogether, and 68 (15%) always obtained an electrocardiogram prior to administration. Of those who used droperidol for agitation, 137 (42%) felt there were no other drugs with greater efficacy. Haloperidol was the most cited alternative agent (n=160, 79%) followed by benzodiazepines (n=223, 68%). Of those who used droperidol for antiemesis, 116 (28%) felt there were no other drugs with greater efficacy than droperidol; promethazine was the most cited alternative agent (n=26O, 64%). Two (0.4%) EPs reported arrhythmias in patients who received droperidol. Only 37 (8%) EPs reported they were unconcerned with potential loss of droperidol from the market.\n\n\nConclusion: Based on this survey, EP use of droperidol has decreased dramatically as a result of the FDA warning. Participants and Parameters in Discourse over Women's Rights and Islam in Malaysia", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "This article explores the social-political environment within which Islamic discourse in relation to human rights and duties takes place within Malaysia, with a focus on women's rights issues. Malaysia, as an acknowledged 'moderate' Muslim majority state, provides an instructive case study, particularly with its accession to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1995, with reservations which were partially withdrawn in 1998. In 2001, the constitution was amended to directly prohibit gender discrimination. Despite these advancements, inegalitarian practices remain and are often justified by reference to Islamic values and culture. In recent years, robust public debate about Islam and women's rights, voiced from multiple perspectives, has surfaced as participants seek to influence the law and policy on women's issues. There is no uniform perspective on these issues and this article demonstrates the diversity of views expressed within Malaysia, informed by personal interviews the author conducted with various political leaders and representatives of local women's NGOs. It also demonstrates how robust internal discourse reveals the ambivalences and divergent views extant within the Muslim community about women's rights issues both on the global and national level. A shared internal consensus, facilitated by a participatory ethos, facilitates cross-cultural dialogue between the Islamic community and the international human rights community. This helps forge a stronger shared basis for human rights, towards the goal of promoting the legitimacy of universal human rights norms to local communities defined by religious affiliation.",
