    "title": "More than Meets the Eye: Gesture Changes Thought, even without Visual Feedback",
    "subtitle": null,
    "abstract": "When speakers gesture, their gestures shape their thoughts,\nbut how this happens remains unclear. What kinds of\nfeedback from gesture—visual, proprioceptive, or both—\ndrive these cognitive effects? Here we address this question\nusing a test bed previously employed to explore gesture’s\ncognitive effects (Beilock & Goldin-Meadow, 2010).\nParticipants solved the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, explained\ntheir solutions in speech and gesture, and solved the puzzle a\nsecond time. Previous studies using this paradigm have\ndemonstrated that the gestures participants produce during the\nexplanation phase affect their ability to solve the problem the\nsecond time. Unlike these prior studies, however, participants\nin the present study were blocked from seeing their hands\nwhile they gestured. Despite this absence of visual feedback,\nour results replicate previous studies in which visual feedback\nwas available. These findings suggest that gesture may shape\nthought through proprioceptive feedback alone.",
