    "abstract": "World knowledge enters into pragmatic utterance interpretation\nin complex ways, and may be defeasible in light of speakers’\nutterances. Yet there is to date a surprising lack of systematic\ninvestigation into the role of world knowledge in pragmatic\ninference. In this paper, we show that a state-of-the-art\nmodel of pragmatic interpretation greatly overestimates the influence\nof world knowledge on the interpretation of utterances\nlike Some of the marbles sank. We extend the model to capture\nthe idea that the listener is uncertain about the background\nknowledge the speaker is bringing to the conversation. This\nextension greatly improves model predictions of listeners’ interpretation\nand also makes good qualitative predictions about\nlisteners’ judgments of how ‘normal’ the world is in light of a\nspeaker’s statement. Theoretical and methodological implications\nare discussed.",
