{ "pk": 25496, "title": "Music familiarity modulates mind wandering during lexical processing", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "Mind wandering has been investigated in a variety of\nsustained attention tasks. In the present research, we\ninvestigated the role of mind wandering while listening to\nfamiliar or unfamiliar musical excerpts, and its effects on\nlinguistic processing. Participants performed a lexical\ncongruity task involving judging the semantic relatedness of a\nlist of word pairs while listening to familiar classical music,\nunfamiliar classical music, or non-music environmental sound\nclips. Mind wandering episodes were probed randomly and\nintermittently for participants to self-report their mind\nwandering episodes during the task. Results showed that\nlistening to familiar music is associated with faster response\ntimes and lower frequency of mind wandering. Whereas mind\nwandering episodes tend to be more frequent when\nparticipants listened to unfamiliar music. Implications from\nprevious attention models and theories of music familiarity\nsuggest that familiar music might increase task enjoyment\nwithout compromising behavioral performance.", "language": "eng", "license": { "name": "", "short_name": "", "text": null, "url": "" }, "keywords": [], "section": "Papers", "is_remote": true, "remote_url": "https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5hv3n49c", "frozenauthors": [ { "first_name": "Shin-Yi", "middle_name": "", "last_name": "Feng", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "Department of Psychology\nInstitute for Intelligent Systems", "department": "" }, { "first_name": "Gavin", "middle_name": "M", "last_name": "Bidelman", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "Institute for Intelligent Systems\nSchool of Communication Sciences & Disorders", "department": "" } ], "date_submitted": null, "date_accepted": null, "date_published": "2015-01-01T18:00:00Z", "render_galley": null, "galleys": [ { "label": "PDF", "type": "pdf", "path": "https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/25496/galley/15120/download/" } ] }
