Such\nencoding effects might prevent positive transfer to problems\nsharing the same formal mathematical structure (Bassok, Wu,\n& Olseth, 1995). In this study with 5th and 6th graders, we\ninvestigated the conditions promoting positive and negative\ntransfer in arithmetic problems that could be solved with two\ndistinct strategies. We showed that basic training do not\novercome the initial impact of semantic encodings, and we\nprovided evidence that a poor semantic encoding of the\ntraining problems leads to transfer errors. This suggests the\nexistence of ontological restrictions on the representation\nmechanisms involved in word arithmetic problem solving",
