    "abstract": "Recent research has shown that expertise in English and music\nreading both rely more on left hemisphere (LH) processing\nwhereas Chinese character processing is more bilateral. Accordingly,\nmusic-reading expertise may influence hemispheric\nlateralization in English word processing more than in Chinese\nprocessing due to stronger competition in LH processing.\nHere we recruited musicians and non-musicians in a divided\nvisual field study of English word and Chinese character naming.\nIn English word processing, whereas non-musicians\nshowed a typical right visual field (RVF)/LH advantage, musicians\nshowed a left visual field (LVF)/right hemisphere\n(RH) advantage and responded significantly faster than nonmusicians\nin both the LVF and the center position. This effect\nmay be due to competition for LH processing between music\nand English reading expertise, making musicians’ English\nword processing more right-lateralized. In contrast, in Chinese\ncharacter naming, both musicians and non-musicians\nshowed a similar bilateral pattern. This result suggests that\nmusic reading experience may have differential influences on\nthe processing of different languages, depending on their similarities\nin the cognitive processes involved",
