    "abstract": "The discourse of laymen and professionals reveals the\ndependence of cognition on the interaction between\nparticipants, and the limitations of studying expertise by\nexamining isolated individual behavior. This paper examines\ndistributed cognition in the management of Multiple Sclerosis\n(MS). By varying the level of patient experience with the\nmanagement of MS, we demonstrate the dependence of\nphysician cognition on the patient’s contribution in four\ndoctor-patient interactions. Experienced patients actively\nconstructed clinical representations and presented initial\nevaluations for the doctor to refine and validate.\nConversations between newly diagnosed patients and doctors\ndemonstrated the physician work to establish a common\nunderstanding of the problem and acceptable interventions.\nOur analysis focuses on the complementary participant roles,\nand challenges the notion that medical cognition equals\nphysician cognition",
