    "abstract": "Response time (RT) is an oft-used but ”noisy” behavioral measure\nin psychology. Here, we combine modeling and psychophysics\nto examine the hypothesis that RT variability may\nreflect ongoing statistical learning and consequent adjustment\nof behavioral strategy. We utilize the stop-signal task, in which\nsubjects respond to a go stimulus on each trial, unless instructed\nnot to by a subsequent, rare stop signal. We model\nacross-trial learning of stop signal frequency (P(stop)) and\nstop-signal onset time (SSD) with a Bayesian hidden Markov\nmodel, and within-trial decision-making as optimal stochastic\ncontrol. The model predicts that RT should increase with\nexpected P(stop) and SSD, a prediction borne out by our human\ndata. Thus, it appears that humans continuously monitor\nenvironmental statistics and adjust behavioral strategy accordingly.\nMore broadly, our approach exemplifies the use of\n”noisy” RT measures for extracting insights about cognitive\nand neural processing.",
