Focusing on word order preferences in binomial expressions\n(e.g. bread and butter), we find meaning in the\nitem-specific variation: more frequent expressions have more\npolarized (i.e. frozen) preferences. Of many models considered,\nonly one that takes expression frequency into account can\npredict the language-wide distribution of preference strengths\nseen in corpus data. Our results support a gradient trade-off in\nlanguage processing between generative knowledge and itemspecific\nknowledge as a function of frequency",
