{ "pk": 25814, "title": "Musical improvisation:\nMulti-scaled spatiotemporal patterns of coordination", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "When jazz musicians perform an improvisational piece of\nmusic their behaviors are not fully prescribed in advance.\nNonetheless their actions become so tightly coordinated and\ntheir decisions so seamlessly intertwined that the musicians\nbehave as a single synergistic unit rather than a collection of\nindividuals. A fundamental aspect of such musical\nimprovisation is the bodily movement coordination that occurs\namong the performing musicians, with the embodied\ninteraction of musicians both supporting and constraining\nmusical creativity. Here we consider the ability of pairs of\npiano players to improvise, to spontaneously coordinate their\nactions with co-performers. We demonstrate the ability of the\ntime-evolving patterns of inter-musician movement\ncoordination as revealed by the mathematical tools of nonlinear\ntime series analyses to provide a new understanding of\nwhat potentiates the novelty of spontaneous musical action.\nCross wavelet spectral analysis is applied to the musical\nmovements of pairs of improvising pianists, a method that\nisolates the strength and patterning of the behavioral\ncoordination across a range of nested time-scales. Additionally,\ncross-recurrence quantification analysis is applied to the series\nof notes produced by each musician to assess when and how\noften they visit the same musical states throughout the\nimprovisation. Revealing the sophistication of the previously\nunexplored dynamics of movement coordination between\nimprovising musicians is an important step towards\nunderstanding how creative musical expressions emerge from\nthe spontaneous coordination of multiple musical bodies", "language": "eng", "license": { "name": "", "short_name": "", "text": null, "url": "" }, "keywords": [ { "word": "Music improvisation" }, { "word": "self-organization" }, { "word": "movement\ncoordination" }, { "word": "complex dynamical systems" }, { "word": "multi-scale analysis" } ], "section": "Papers", "is_remote": true, "remote_url": "https://escholarship.org/uc/item/7xx3d0md", "frozenauthors": [ { "first_name": "Ashley", "middle_name": "", "last_name": "Walton", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University of Cincinnati", "department": "" }, { "first_name": "Michael", "middle_name": "J", "last_name": "Richardson", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University of Cincinnati", "department": "" }, { "first_name": "Peter", "middle_name": "", "last_name": "Langland-Hassan", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University of Cincinnati", "department": "" }, { "first_name": "Anthony", "middle_name": "", "last_name": "Chemero", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University of Cincinnati", "department": "" }, { "first_name": "Auriel", "middle_name": "", "last_name": "Washburn", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University of Cincinnati", "department": "" } ], "date_submitted": null, "date_accepted": null, "date_published": "2015-01-01T18:00:00Z", "render_galley": null, "galleys": [ { "label": "PDF", "type": "pdf", "path": "https://journalpub.escholarship.org/cognitivesciencesociety/article/25814/galley/15438/download/" } ] }
