Parents\ncommonly question children, but do they use questions to teach?\nResearch has shown that informal pedagogical situations elicit\nstronger inferences than the same evidence observed in non-\npedagogical situations. Certain questions (“pedagogical questions”)\nhave similar features. We investigate the frequency and distribution\nof pedagogical questions from mother-child conversations\ndocumented in the CHILDES database. We show that pedagogical\nquestions are commonplace, are more frequent for middle-class\nmothers compared to working-class mothers, are more frequent\nduring free play than during daily routines, and are more frequent in\nmothers who ask more questions. The results serve as a first step\ntowards understanding the role of questions in informal pedagogy.",
