In\norder to specify such interpretative processes, we created\nstructurally isomorphic word problems that could be solved\nwith two distinct algorithms. We tested whether a distinction\nbetween cardinal and ordinal quantities would lead solvers, due\nto their daily-life knowledge, to build different representations,\ninfluencing their strategies as well as the nature of their\ndrawings. We compared 5th grade children and adults in order\nto assess the validity of this hypothesis with participants of\nvarying arithmetic proficiency. The results confirmed that the\ndistinction between cardinal and ordinal situations led to\ndifferent solving strategies and to different drawings among\nboth age groups.
