{ "pk": 31747, "title": "Children with Dyslexia Acquire Skill More Slowly", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "Two studies are reported in which a group of adolescent\nchildren with dyslexia and a group of normal children\nmatched for age and IQ undertook extended training. In\nStudy 1, which comprised three phases of learning over\nan 18 month period, the children learned to navigate\nvia key presses around a fixed circuit of a computer\nmaze. It w a s concluded that, following extended\ntraining under these optimal conditions, the children\nwith dyslexia had normal 'strength' of automatisation\n(as assessed by resistance to unlearning, by ease of\nreleaming, and by dual task performance) but that their\n'quality' of automatisation (as assessed by speed and\naccuracy) was impaired. Study 2 investigated the\nblending of two compatible simple reaction responses\ninto a two choice reaction. Although performance on\nthe simple reactions was equivalent across groups, the\nchildren with dyslexia had m o r e difficulty combining\nthe two skills at firstand showed significantly less\nlearning over the course of the training period. T h e\nestimated learning rate was around 5 0 % slower for the\nchildren with dyslexia, leading to the prediction that the\nproportionate slowing in acquisition time would\nincrease as the square root of the normal acquisition\ntime.
