    "abstract": "In recent years, the push for more modern and multiculturally relevant texts in the secondary English curriculum has become a double edged sword, both presenting the advantage of allowing students to engage in works that more closely resemble their own lives and the disadvantage of pusshing out classical text which provide a window into the progression of the English language. Though there is no shortage of Western literature present throughout secondary texts, there is a noticable lack of Medieval texts, creating an Enlgish literature curriclum which only spans as far back as Shakespeare in most cases. This unit plan presents a potential avenue to reintroduce Medieval texts into an advanced secondary curriculum, allowing students with the desire to expore complex and sophisticated literature the opportunity to see the progression of the English language and societal structures through the study of selected tales within Geoffrey Chaucer's \nThe Canterbury Tales\n. Through the critical analysis of these texts, students can weigh the controversial ideologies with its literary merit, considering the key question of \"why Chaucer?\"",
