{ "pk": 58103, "title": "The Idea of the Common: A Pedagogical Assessment of a Graduate Architecture Seminar in Dublin, Ireland", "subtitle": null, "abstract": "Public space—its history, uses and especially design—lies at the heart of the architectural curriculum. Yet defining this term can be a slippery task: what are we alluding to, specifically, when we speak of public space? Is it an idea, a phenomenon, a distinct place that can be drawn, measured and plotted? In the formal academic discipline of architecture, we freely use and apply this expression and its cognates to a multitude of situations, but we seldom pause to consider, much less scrutinize, its underlying meaning. This essay explores the conundrum of “concretizing” public space through the lens of a graduate seminar. The seminar aims to develop a series of lucid and balanced dialogues pertaining to commonality in the city.", "language": "en", "license": { "name": "", "short_name": "", "text": null, "url": "" }, "keywords": [ { "word": "public space, urban order, institution, commonality, Dublin" } ], "section": "Articles", "is_remote": true, "remote_url": "https://escholarship.org/uc/item/9n0795gd", "frozenauthors": [ { "first_name": "Samantha", "middle_name": "Leah", "last_name": "Martin-McAuliffe", "name_suffix": "", "institution": "University College Dublin", "department": "" } ], "date_submitted": "2016-01-01T22:51:01Z", "date_accepted": "2016-01-01T22:51:01Z", "date_published": "2016-10-21T22:51:00Z", "render_galley": null, "galleys": [ { "label": "", "type": "pdf", "path": "https://journalpub.escholarship.org/ucdavislibrary_streetnotes/article/58103/galley/44266/download/" } ] }
