Barrier vulnerability following outwash: A balance of overwash and dune gap recovery
Published: 2026-08-11
Subjects: Engineering, Physical Sciences and Mathematics
Existing barrier evolution models only simulate storm impacts from landward-driven flows (overwash), neglecting the impacts of seaward-directed flows (outwash). Here, we modify an existing model to incorporate outwash processes. We find that outwash enhances barrier vulnerability (the tendency to drown) over decadal timescales by scarring the island interior, creating lower, narrower landforms. [...]
Remote sensing and deep learning for standing dead-tree detection and mapping: A review of advances, challenges, and future directions
Published: 2026-05-07
Subjects: Forest Management, Forest Sciences, Other Forestry and Forest Sciences
Standing dead trees are visible indicators of recent tree mortality and an important transitional component linking forest disturbance to future lying deadwood, habitat availability, and carbon storage. As drought, insect outbreaks, pathogens, and climate extremes intensify tree mortality worldwide, scalable methods are needed to detect and map standing dead trees consistently across forest [...]
Natural aerosol variability can reverse the apparent air-quality response to abrupt emission reductions
Published: 2026-10-05
Subjects: Physical Sciences and Mathematics
Abrupt societal disruptions, including economic shocks, pandemic lockdowns, and armed conflicts, are widely used as natural experiments for attributing changes in air quality to changes in emissions. Such attribution commonly rests on observed concentrations: combustion tracers fall, and the resulting improvement is credited to reduced emissions. Here we show that coincident natural aerosol [...]
Stochastic Inversion of geophysical data by sequential Bayesian updating under a non-stationary Gaussian process prior
Published: 2026-05-20
Subjects: Earth Sciences, Statistics and Probability
The acquisition of geophysical data is becoming increasingly important in the context of critical mineral exploration. Geophysical data and inversion product are essential to map many components of the critical mineral system by detecting geophysical anomalies that can be interpreted by expert geologists. However, the inversion of airborne geophysical data acquired along flightlines into [...]
Spatial and temporal variations in slip rate over millions of years on an extensional fault system: implications for seismic hazard
Published: 2025-10-14
Subjects: Tectonics and Structure
Slip rate is a key input for fault-based seismic hazard assessment, with temporal and spatial variations in slip rate along and between faults influencing earthquake size and recurrence. Temporal variations in slip rate have been attributed to earthquake clustering and anti-clustering in tectonically active settings. Here we explore the combined temporal and spatial assessment of slip rate [...]
Terra Preta de Índio as an Emergent Ecological State: Reclassifying a Path-Dependent Attractor from Constructible Substrate
Published: 2026-02-28
Subjects: Soil Science
Terra Preta de Índio, or Amazonian Dark Earth, is widely recognized as an anthropogenic, carbon rich, fertile, and unusually persistent soil associated with long term Indigenous land use in the Amazon Basin. Prior research has established the importance of charcoal derived black carbon, nutrient enrichment, stable organic matter, and high nutrient holding capacity in explaining many of its [...]
Productive Rather Than Aesthetic Urban Landscapes Drive Actualized Sustainable Consumption
Published: 2026-05-25
Subjects: Environmental Studies, Geographic Information Sciences, Human Geography, Nature and Society Relations
Global sustainability initiatives prioritize urban greenery to foster resilient cities, yet their efficacy remains under-researched in the Global South. Conventional reliance on self-reported data risks a pervasive “green illusion”— a discrepancy between reported behavior and actual sustainable consumption behavior. To diagnose this anomaly, we synthesize spatial morphology and psychometric [...]
Polar ice-cores unravel the formation of a UV window during magnetic field collapse ~ 42 ka BP
Published: 2026-05-08
Subjects: Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geochemistry, Other Environmental Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics
During geomagnetic excursions (GEs), compromised magnetic field and increased cosmic-ray bombardment can deplete the ozone layer forming ‘UV window(s)’ in the Earth’s atmosphere. Here, using triple sulfur-isotope systematics in polar ice-core sulfate record spanning 600 years of the Laschamp GE, we provide direct evidence of the formation of a UV window. Several events of UV-induced anomalous [...]
Bridging social–ecological systems and ecological economics to navigate polycrisis
Published: 2026-05-22
Subjects: Social and Behavioral Sciences
Human societies and ecological systems experience interacting and compounding crises, a condition often described as ‘polycrisis’. To better navigate it, we propose a synthesis agenda at the interface of ecological economics (EE) and social–ecological systems (SES) research. Through collaborative synthesis and building on a practical framework of crisis dynamics as shocks and creeping changes, we [...]
mineralML: Leveraging Machine Learning for Probabilistic Mineral Classification
Published: 2026-03-27
Subjects: Earth Sciences, Geochemistry, Geology, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Probability, Statistical Methodology, Statistics and Probability, Volcanology
Characterizing phase assemblages in igneous rocks and the chemical variability within is the fundamental basis of many petrological investigations. We present mineralML (mineral classification using Machine Learning), an open-source Python package that classifies common igneous minerals based on oxide chemistries, and provides calibrated prediction scores. mineralML employs a two-stage neural [...]
Evaluating the potential of SMART subsea cable pressure sensors to constrain Subpolar North Atlantic circulation variability through Observing System Simulation Experiments
Published: 2025-09-17
Subjects: Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology
Bolstering global ocean observing infrastructure is critical for understanding, quantifying, and predicting Earth's climate variability and change. The SMART (Science Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunications) Subsea Cables present an opportunity to acquire high-frequency, seafloor-based observations of ocean variables, encouraging assessment of their value prior to deployment. We conduct [...]
Constraints on magma source conditions from hydraulic fracture models and seismic observations of dyke tip deceleration
Published: 2026-06-04
Subjects: Physical Sciences and Mathematics
Seismicity shows that magmatic dykes decelerate as they propagate laterally. Hydraulic fracture theory shows this deceleration relates to the coupling between the source and the dyke. Here, we use hydraulic fracture models to derive scaling laws for the length, width, and shape of dykes driven by three source boundary conditions: constant flux, constant pressure, and a finite volume release. [...]
ADMM-Guided Physics-Informed Deep Learning for Two-Dimensional Acoustic Impedance Inversion with Reweighted ℓ1 Sparse Regularization
Published: 2026-06-06
Subjects: Physical Sciences and Mathematics
Acoustic impedance inversion is ill-posed because post-stack seismic data are band-limited and noisy. Reweighted ℓ1 sparse inversion sharpens impedance boundaries but, applied trace by trace, ignores lateral geological continuity. We present a two-dimensional ADMM-guided physics-informed neural framework in which a reweighted ℓ1 ADMM estimate (after He et al., 2022) serves as a physics prior for [...]
Deciphering the morphology of turbiditic lobe bodies according to hierarchy and system size
Published: 2026-06-04
Subjects: Applied Statistics, Earth Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Planetary Sedimentology, Statistics and Probability
Turbiditic lobe bodies (LBs) are the ultimate deposits of source-to-sink systems. Their geometry and architecture vary with depositional environment (marine vs. lacustrine), hierarchy (lobe elements, lobes, lobe complexes), system size (large vs. small) and topographic confinement. Constraining these variations is useful for characterizing the dispersion of sediments, carbon, nutrients, and [...]
